For the life of me, I can’t figure out why so many ask “Is this package/salary/offer OK?”, yet often provide so little info as to make answering the question virtually impossible.
So let me make these immodest suggestions:
First, you don’t need us to compare what’s on offer in Singapore to what you’re currently getting at home. Ask the offering company HR for additional info if you don’t understand any aspects of the offer, whether it’s the medical benefits, tax situation, retirement plan, etc. Find the relevant currency cross rate if you need to think in your home currency and the offer is in S$.
Second, you may wonder how far your $$$ will go in Singapore. Fair enough. You may be pleasantly surprised if you’re from an expensive country/city; you may be shocked if you’re from a cheap country/city. But use cost-of-living calculators and use the search facility on this site as this info has been retread a billion times.
Third, you may wonder what the going rate is for your particular job here in Singapore. Again, fair enough. This may be useful info in terms of negotiating your offer. But if you’re absolutely better off staying at home, then it isn’t all that relevant whether your offer in Singapore was a good relative to other people doing your work. If you’re here mostly for the “experience,” well, that’s something only you can place a value on.
Finally, don’t ask “can I live on this…” If you’re eligible for an EP, the answer is yes. What you want to know is how your lifestyle will compare. So tell us your lifestyle in detail and the helpful member of this site will let you know the going rate.
Want to know how much a 4,000 sq. ft. house costs? Someone will tell you. Want to know the going rate for a high-class hooker? Ditto. But if we don’t know what you consider “living” it’s going to be tough to help.
