can you get gravy browning here?  I can't make gravy because it always ends up looking anaemic.  Does anyone know places to buy gravy browning (and also beef oxo if possible). thanks

Cold Storage sells Bisto - best in the world for brown gravy

isn't bisto the ready made granules?  I'm after the stuff to brown it with, because I make the rest myself the old fashioned way, with onions, flour, oil etc.

OK - the usual way is to fry the flour in a dry wok till the flour turns brown. Then add the fat and the rest of the stuff - you get natural brown gravy.
I find the bisto granules healthier.

You can definitely get Gravy Browning here as I have some, cannot remember where from though (it was a while ago!) - probably Jasons or marketplace in tanglin Mall.

I always put vegemite in my gravy to make it darker - works a treat!

Oxo is a bit better than Bisto. However, you can order lots of English goodies from expatshopping.com.

Parisian Essence is what you use for browning things without adding any flavour. It is usually sold with other essences and colourings with baking items

Frying flour and browning is from another generation surely and yes unhealthy.

I have a million oxo cubes - I eat them raw, make drinks etc.

Also good for gravy, add hot water then thicken with Bisto. So easy. Good for beef stews too.

Ah yes, mais Amiee Coaster, unhealthy, but the taste is unbeatable is it not?

You would never find us professional chefs making le bisto - c'est terrible!

Delia would spin on her kitchen stool if you suggested making le bisto, et Keith Floyd would stop drinking in despair!  For me le bisto is not an option!

BTW I made gravy last night and used Marmite as Anna suggested and it worked a treat (and I don't even like Marmite usually!!) - merci Anna

Gravy browning is available at Cold Storage Gourmet, I saw it yesterday. I think it was with sauces like Lea and Perrins, mushroom essence etc not with stock cubes nor with the gravy granules like Bisto.

Try using dark soy sauce...not too much as it can be quite salty but it does work well.
