I am having a baby here in Singapore in May and am very confused about what hospital to deliver at. I keep on getting mixed reviews about the various hospitals around. Can anyone shed some positive / negative experiences about their deliveries in a local hospital...  Your opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Don't worry, you have plenty of time to make up your mind.  The beauty of private medicine being that you're the boss.  If you don't like the responses to your questions you can just move right along!

The main thing you need to know is what kind of birth you want.  If you feel most comfortable with a high tech approach then all of the big hospitals will give you a fabulous service.  Medical care here in Singapore is as good as in the west.  If you want a more natural approach than you will have to be prepared to lay down the law a little to your physician.  Most  people here are content to leave all the decisions to the doctor and a fiesty expat mum can be arude awakening to some.  Thompson Medical Centre has a reputation for being very mother centric and there is always the possibility of homebirth.

Enjoy your pregnancy and good luck for a safe and happy birth

Dear MJ,  Thanks for your encouraging words!  Thompson was already at the top of my list - perhaps now it is confirmed.  No longer Confused.

Confused, I just put a post up last week waxing lyrical about Thomson. Not only are nurses great while you're there, they were great source of tips etc for me as a first timer. Then you can get a senior staff nurse in for a house visit at $40 for all your worries. Their antenatal classes I've attended are v local so expats may feel a little out of it but don't worry, I'm sure they're v welcoming. All the best!

We've just switched from Mount E to Thompson. Mount E seems very professional, but felt like a factory production line, with no time for people to stop and talk about your little questions or worries. At Thompson on the other hand everyone seems to have time for you. Feels more like a hotel than a hospital, but seems very professional none-the-less. I think its more as I would expect a private hospital in the UK to treat you.

That said, we're only half way into our first, so hardly experts!!

Dear New Mum & First Timers,

Thanks very much for your replies! I'm going to Thompson for a tour this week.  Confused.
