We're moving into an apt. on the 12th floor. My daughter's room, she's 2.5 years old, has windows with easy to open levers (the type that you simply lift up to open the window). I'm petrified about her curiosity and these windows. They will be in reach as there is a bed very near to these windows. Does anyone have advice on how best to make the windows inoperable, gadgets, tricks, etc.?

I went to Toys-R-Us to look for some sort of safety gadget but had no luck.

Any advice would be very helpful.

Not sure if this is much of an answer but I did see those adjustable "fence" things in Fair Price at Bukit Timah yesterday.

Do you know the ones I mean?

They are designed to go in doorways or at the top of stairs and are adjustable width-wise. Perhaps they will fit into the window frame? Maybe either at the bottom of the window so that your darling cannot reach the latch, or right in front of the latch? I am pretty sure that the bolts (screws?) that hold them in place would be strong enough to suspend it.

I have also seen many types of Child safety products for doors, windows etc but exactly where I saw them escapes me just now. I will come backand re-post when I remember.

Good luck!

There are companies that will install locked grilles on windows, although I understand it can be expensive. We negotiated them as part of our rental package - landlord paid to have them installed for us. I don't know the names of companies that install them, but you could try asking your landlord or asking your condo's management office for a referral.

I think it may have been IKEA that had the large range of child saftey devices....perhaps it is worth a look to see if they have anything suitable for your type of latch?

Try Mother's World. They have a branch at Great World City and the Forum ( I think)
Our landlord had locks installed on all windows for us as part of the lease. They work well.

After many hours of research we decided to get window locks fitted by a locksmith in our daughter's room.  It's not cheap - $35 per window - but it's a very professional job.

The "safety" products available here just weren't up to scratch in our opinion.  My first preference was for a gadget to prevent the window being opened more than a few inches but I couldn't find a locksmith able to do with believe it or not!

Good luck.

Have just started looking for apartment with children in mind too.  ALL Landlords have expressed their willingness to fit window grills if they arent already there.  I would much rather have the grills on the windows than locking them to at least get some fresh air into the rooms.  These are key locked anyway and cant be opened.

Approach your landlord about it. Good Luck!
