what is the employers responsibility re maids medicals.  My maid got a letter recently - or maybe it was addressed to me - she said it required her to do a medical.  She attended the medical and gave me the receipt.  do i need to do anything?  if there is a problem with the medical how am i advised?

You don't have to do anything. She is required to take the form to the doctor and they send it in. If there is anything wrong with her you will be informed by the Ministry.

She will have to take one every six months. They will normally send out the notice a few weeks in advance.

I learned the hard way that this isn't what we would consider a proper medical. The government requires them to be tested for pregnancy and HIV (?) and that's it. We now pay for our maid to have an proper medical (including pap smear .. you still need one even if not sexually active! .. and breast exam) annually. It doesn't cost a lot but it's worth it to find out if there are any problems.

Most of these girls depend on their jobs for their family's livelihood. So they won't necessarily tell you if they are sick until it's too late, for fear of being sent home or scolded for being ill. If you have to hospitalize your maid, the insurance will kick in. But if it's a long course of medication (that she may or may not want to take!) or doctor's visits you are on your own. An annual checkup will help you both deal with small problems before they become big ones.
