I am looking for an antique chinese cabinet -saw some in Chinatown. I would like to know is there any problem leaving Sing. with antiques, can you really bargain on these pieces and any recommendations where to buy.

Try Li Bai at 60B (Riverside) Martin Road, Trademart #04-05. Don't go in the Trademart entrance go in the one to the left as you face it. Go down to the back of the far building and take the lift to the 4th floor.

Catherine and I have purchased some nice pieces there over the years. He has a good Tibetan Temple cabinet in stock at the moment, and a very good redwood antique cabinet hidden in the workshop - you have to be nosey! If you prefer plain wood he has several of these as well.

I would advise you to buy an old if restored piece as the wood will be well seasoned and will last in temperate climates. it is the modern copies that tend to split because the wood was too green when the carpenter used it.

Depending on the piece you ar looking at you can bargain them down between 20-30%. Remember normally the better the piece the more reluctant they are to give much discount.
