We have brought over to Singapore, two TV sets from the UK.  One is a Sharp and the other is Toshiba.

I arranged for them to be link to cable TV and the engineer informed me that they are no compatible.  Is this true?  Has anyone else had this problem?

Whilst we were waiting for our sets to arrive, we brought a large projector TV locally.  Will this TV not be compatible back in the UK?

Thanks for any advice.

You won't have any problem.

What you might need is a scart to RCA jack converter if you want to use that input.

Check your projector's specs. If it says PAL then you won't have any problem taking it back to the UK (it's probably multi-format).

TV's signals in the UK are in the PAL I format whilst in Singapore they are in PAL B/G.

Your old TV may or may not work in Singapore dependening on whether it can also accept PAL B/G.

Likewise your new TV will work direct from the normal aerial socket in the UK if it can also handle PAL I.

However, in both cases you you need to check the manual. Dealers will tell you that your TV is "multi-format" but this does not mean that it can accept all formats.

If they don't accept the correct format for the country that you are in then you need to get some sort of convertor. Alternatively, you may be able get reception from a cable or satellite receiver or a VCR which allows output using the A/V connectors (these are the  red, yellow and white sockets on your equipment).

PAL is a picture format and the B/G and I are sound encoding formats I believe. The cable box here provides RCA audio output, so you don't need to translate the sound signal from the co-axial, you can send the sound anywhere you want from the RCA jack.

One good get around is to get a multiformat video recorder, then you can pass everything through it. But sound is your only problem. If you have audio input on your tv or you have a SCART V/L/R option, you won't have a problem.

Good advice here.

I brough over my old PAL (I) TV set from the UK and I cannot get sound from the terrestial channels.

I understand that you can get a crystal changed inside the set to switch between PAL I and PAL B/G (but I haven't looked into this, maybe someone else has).

If I were you, if the TV set is potentially old enough not to be all PAL standards compliant, bin it and get a spanking new one.

I wish I had.
