It has been a little more than 2 weeks since I arrived in Singapore and I have been experiencing severe hair loss since then. I thought this was just a matter of adjusting to the local water but it does not appear to be so.

If you have experienced the same here in Singapore, please let me know and how to fix the problem. If I have to seek medical advice on this matter, can someone please recommend a good doctor? Thanks very much.

I have a copy of the AWA's book for Expatriates in Singapore (well worthwhile buying a copy, it has great info). They actually state that Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) can cause hair loss and lots of newcomers get this condition because of a change in their diet to eating the local food. Have you been eating out a lot in the Hawker centres? Beware - lots of MSG is used in the local dishes - it is supposed to be a flavour enhancer (I guess that if one eats food frequently containing chillies and hot spices then maybe the tastebuds become less sensitive, hence the elaborate use of MSG).

Always check if MSG has been added to whatever you are ordering - some hawker centre stalls even have a notice saying "No MSG" and check canned goods in supermarkets - for example some Heinz products are labelled "No MSG" too.

Also, it is quite stressful having a change of lifestyle and the hair loss may be due to stress - I've found that my hair comes out in handfuls too a few weeks after I've moved - but eventually it all gets back on an even keel and grows normally again. Try to relax if you can (easier said than done!)and check to see if you can buy the English "Chiver's Jelly" (jello)cubes which is sometimes on sale in Jason's deli (behind Denny's in the rear tower of Orchard Towers on Claymore Road, near Muddy Murphys). The jelly cubes which I love to eat raw - I've done it since I was a child - contain gelatine which strengthens nails and hair. I guess you could check the US packets of Jello and see if that contains gelatine too, but I've never bought the American brand so I don't know if it is in powder/crystal form or cubes and don't know if boiling water would nullify the effect. Worth a try anyway! Hope this helps and your hair recovers soon!

Loss of hair can also be a result of intake of strong medication, but it doesn't always show itself right away. I was quite ill for a period of one month a couple of years ago. The loss of hair started about three months after that, lasted one month and was gone again, it was due to medication but which at that point I had stopped taking already since three months. The above post is right, it can sometimes be a change of lifestyle but maybe there was something else before you came out here and you have already forgotten about it or wouldn't relate it to the loss of hair. Good luck anyway.

Another reason could well be iron deficiency, maybe caused by change of diet. Worth getting your iron levels checked by a GP.

Thanks Lizzy, I was about to ask the same question. I was at the hairdresser yesterday and she mentioned that I have problem of hairloss and dandruff. I arrived couple of months ago and have had some work related problems, so maybe it's just stress. But the dandruff, it's not stress based, I assume...
So I'm looking for a cure. Any "home" medications from pharmacy or doctors to recommend?
Thanks advance!

I have been here for almost 10 weeks. Although I have not suffered from hair loss I have felt the effects of MSG in other ways. We always ask if they use MSG in food preparation -anyway I have been using a hair tonic for my husband's hair (poor man with his receding hair line ) and it actually works really well. If you can find 2 oz of rosemary oil, 1 oz of lavender oil mix the 2 and add the juice of 1 lemon, apply to your hair/scalp for one week at nite-leave in overnight wash your hair the next morning/repeat this treatment once a month and your hair will look great. My husband and I both have curly hair and my hair justs shines and looks great. I was at one of the malls and found a similar hair treatment oil called Natalie that is from australia-it works well too but I prefer to mix my own. Hope this helps! Good luck in Singapore!

Hi Lizzy,

Here is a very simple answer,we have been living here for 6 months in total, had the same problem. It took a month or so to stop.
Its just different water, climate ect...
Dont waste your time on docters unless you think you need to .

Anytime your body experiences changes in environment, climate, water, food, pollution, stress, etc, extra hairfall is common. Worrying and feeling anxious will only aggravate it. Get enough rest, balanced nutrition, exercise and let time take care of you (maybe weeks to a few months). Trust me -I have traveled a lot and lived in many places... (my receding hairline is a gift from my parents - inevitable lah!)
