Special Education Schools

I am an American looking at a possible relocation to Singapore.  One of our children is a 7 yr old boy with special needs.  I am looking for any information on schools for children with special needs.  You help or direction is appreciated.

You haven't specified the type of 'special needs' education your son requires. Is he currently attending a special school, or a local public school with extra classroom assistance? Have you checked with the Singapore American School as to any provision they can make for your son?

Other schools to check out are: Dover Court School in Dover Road; "Horizon School" (majority of pupils are handicapped to some degree I understand), and for more severe special needs I understand that there is a school called "Genesis" set up (I think) by an American expat; this is located near the Botanic gardens. There is/was some information about this school in the FAQ section on moving out and setting up in Singapore. Also a search engine should be able to find you more info on these schools if there is not already a link on this site.

Horizon School has closed down now.  Genesis School for Special Education runs on an American curriculum I think and is for high functioning special needs children.  The principal is an American expat.

Not sure what you mean by special needs precisely, but if it involves a wheelchair, then seriously think about it all. Singapore is not set up for wheelchairs or prams - steps into shopping malls, bridges (steps only). I could go on. That's my opinion right now. Take care, and all the best.

There are two I can think of.

Chow Yang Special School in Newton and Katong Special School (principal is Dorothy Tan) at 10 La Salle St.   Both offer ESN curriculae.

Singapore is not the best place for children with special needs.  If your son has lots of issues the American School will probably not take him.  Genesis School is run by an American and excepts all types of cases but is based on space available.  The schools mentioned by Pomp are MINDS (MOVEMENT FOR THE INTELLECTUALLY DISABLED OF SINGAPORE) Schools and are geared more for Down's students I believe.  Hope this helps.
