Various postings on this before, so briefly. Your cordless phone will work, but is illegal if it uses 900Mhz frequency (same as GSM phone network)- ppl have been caught for this  . Answering machine prob work, but will need a 120-240v transformer, will not be TAS (Telecom Auth Sing) approved and will strictly speaking be illegal

This 900 MHz topic is starting to do my head in. What I would like to know is what makes Singapores 900MHz GSM network any different to the other 900MHz GSM networks in all other countries where you are allowed to use 900 MHz cordless phones. eg - most counties in Europe - All of the US ( I know 900 MHz GSM is not available in all states). Can anyone explain

Dont waste your time and effort moving such trivial things.  Just buy a new cordless phone and answering machine when you get here.  These things are not expensive and it is easier than packing, shipping, unpacking, buying transformers (for phone and answering machine), etc.  One of the greatest aspects of moving to a foreign country is the chance to shed all of your "things".  It is quite liberating (at least for men, but after the first country, even my wife has become more appreciative of the opportunity to leave all our baggage behind and start over again).

alanh - it's got to do with allocation of spectrum.  900MHz is reserved for GSM, and if you bring in a cordless phone of the same frequency you'd be "stealing" from the same spectrum people are paying for.
