Author Topic: Giving birth to a boy in Singapore? Serve Singapore Army?  (Read 3653 times)

I'm a Singaporean and my husband is American.  We were relocated to Singapore and I'm now pregnant.  Heard from the American Embassy that if we have a baby boy, he needs to serve the Singapore army when he is 18 years old.  Any idea on where we can get more information about it?  From the Singapore Govt?  We will need to decide if we want to give birth in the States instead.
Please help, anyone has similar experience?

If your bb is not a citizen of Singapore and not a PR, he does not need to go through NS.

Otherwise, he need to ...either as a citizen or as a 2nd generation PR.

If one of the parents is a Singapore citizen, the child becomes a Singapore citizen if he is born in Singapore. If both parents are citizens of another country, the child does not automatically become a Singapore citizen and will not be required to serve NS at age 18.

BTW, the U.S. has stopped conscription more than 20 years ago. The 18-year old males roam free like mustangs here.

Even if your BB ends up with PR, he still has a choice re military service. He can forfeit Singapore PR before he is 18 and be a Yank for the rest of his life, in which case he doesn't have to do MS. (I think).

you might want to check archives. maybe look under birth, born in singapore etc. or just sinapore as a search start.

This is the URL to Singapore Constitution.
http://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/law/sn00000_.html

From there, search for "national service" and you can read up everything about it.
