We live in a condominium on East Coast that does not seem to recycle.  Does anyone know any companies that recycle newspapers, batteries, etc?

Any information would be useful as we want to save our precious earth for our children!  :-)

It is very frustrating that it is this difficult to find out about recycling in Singapore. Doesn't anybody care about saving the tree here in Singapore?Huh

It's much harder to recycle in a condo than in landed properties where newspaper men often come round to buy your old paper. There are recycling bins scattered around the island -- cal Min of Environment. Some of the hotels ysed to recycle bottles for the public, try Marina Mandarin, esp useful after xmas binges with lots of wine bottles leftover

Recycling is possible.  Our condo actually put up paper recycling bins a few months ago!

There are little trucks driving around the  landed houses here that actually buy newspaper from people for recycling (sure they don't pay much, but great idea).

Also my son's playschool made an excursion to a paper recycling factory on the west coast a few weeks ago, so recycling does exist here!!  (well actually they dont really recycle it here, just pack it up for shipping to Indonesia / Thailand where water & manpower is cheaper).

We live in a condo complex, so it is a bit hard to know when the newspaper men is coming around.

I just think there should be bins for different types of material to recycle i.e. plastic, papers, glass bottles, etc, that are scattered around residential neighbourhoods. So I don't have to take the taxi all the way to Marina Mandarin, everytime I need to throw my bottles.

How come the government is not doing anything about this? Can somebody tell me whom in the government to contact for this sort of things?

I think we need to save the environment. It would be great if we start doing it bit by bit.

Check with your condo cleaner about newspapers.  I give our newspapers to her & she sells them to the collection truck, who in turns sells them to the recycling plant.  Every little bit helps (in this case, the environment & condo cleaner).  I haven't had any luck with bottles or cans.

I took lots of glass- jars, old glasswear, wine bottles (!!??)to the collection point behind The Pan Pacific hotel as listed in the file sent to me by the Singapore Environmental Council a few days ago. There are LOADS of places to take plastic/glass/paper/batteries/toner cartridges in the island. There should be better PR about this! Send me an email and I will forward the file to you.

Hi,

It is true about no place for recycling. It does not make sense that in order to recycle one has to go all the way to Pan Pacific hotel.

Pan Pacific is but one of 1/2 dozen places to recycle GLASS. There really are lots of places on the island to recycle...but like most "new" things in a given society...it may take some effort (and lots of PR) to get the inital ball rolling. There ARE resources. It is up to the interested to get out the word. I will send the file if you want more info...see above.

I work in the environmental sector and was recently sent a list of companies/organisations who will come and collect a lot of different recyclable household items - I'll dig it out and post it on here in next few days, otherwise contact 'Farheen' at the Regional Institute of Environmental Technology (744885) and she will provide you with the list.
