I am living in Singapore as a dependant.

I have now decided that I would like to work and would like to apply for a work permit.  I would have no sponser because I would be self-employed.

Does anyone know how I would go about this?

Do the Government allow people to work in Singapore as a free lance?

What information would the Government request?

What are the chances of my getting a permit in the current economic climate?

sorry there are so many question but if someone has already been through this procedure they may be able to help.

My advice is, you just go to SIR and ask for Letter of Consent. This will allow you to work while at the same time you still can keep your DP. Cos once you apply for your own EP, you have to cancel the DP, and there is no guarantee you can get the EP.

Thanks for the advice satine.

If, as you suggest, I apply for this 'letter of consent', can I just go to the SIR offices by Lavendar MRT with my passport, green card, certificates etc. just like that?

Do I need to apply in writing or will the above do?

Thanks heaps

I think no need to go to SIR.
You can go to their website and download
a form "Letter of Consent".
Fill it out and fax or mail it back to SIR,
that is all.

However, I think you need a company as sponsor as required by SIR.

Good Luck

Mango,

I am also on a DP, and recently started working.

You DO need a sponser company, but the process is quite easy - it is a one page document that the employer has to fill out, with your details and signature.

I'm not sure how you go about it if you are looking to open your own business though.

The other thing you may find hard is actually convincing a company (esp if they are a local company) that this is all they need to do. During the interviews I had, this process seemed to be the major issue - it is outside the norm.......also be aware, that a lot of companies are advertising for Singaporean/PR's only need apply. It has taken me 6mths to find work.

Good Luck!!!!!!!
