We've only been in Singapore for two weeks, but have not been able to find any shops selling used books - is this illegal? Seems odd that cities like Bangkok and London, even Kathmandu would have better used book shops than Singapore. Any advice appreciated.

You can get new books but at a very good price - $5-8 esp computer books (some outdated but there are very good ones that are just 3-4 years in publication), accounting, biology and many non fictional books at Bras Brasah Complex, ground floor (Opposite the chinese book stores)  In the same complex, you can get fictional books at 1st level as well. One financial mgt book i recently bought at $8 was still sold in an MPH bookstore at $90! SAME EDITION!! Another $5 hardcover book I got at Christmas last year was sold at $30 (softcover) in Borders.  BUT you have to choose carefully & find the occassional gems among them...

There is also an Indian book store on the 2nd level that sells 2nd hand text books.

regards

EMF in Holland Village Shopping Centre is great and if they don't have what you want they will take your number and call you when they get it.  Sonny's in Far East Plaza is good, too.  Both rent books.  You buy it cheap and then get most of your money back if you return the book in two months.
