Dear all,

I'm an EP holder for more than 1 year, and my wife and daughter just got their DP approved. Currently my wife is expecting our second child. My questions:

(1) Is my wife permitted to deliver her baby in Singapore with her DP status?

(2) How will be the status of the new-born baby? Will she automatically get DP status as well?

(3) Can I ask my embassy to issue a passport for the new-born baby? If I can't, then what will be her status in Singapore without any valid travel document?

Thanks.

1.Yes. Many expat babies are born in Sing.

2. Yes (have to apply for DP for the baby - check with your employer or contact the Singapore Immigration service for how to go about doing this)The birth certificate will be stamped "Not a Singapore Citizen".

3. You will need to apply to your embassy for a passport for the baby - including taking photos of the newborn to go in the passport! Contact your Embassy for the procedure well in advance of the birth.

Expat is right. If I remember correctly, the hospital gave us some document which we then took to the Registry/Immigration office who issued an official laminated birth certificate and dependant's pass at the same time.

As for the passport, just go to your high comm/embassy, submit the necessary forms with pictures and birth cert. They charge you an arm & a leg and do the rest.

The baby will inherit the mom's citizenship, not Singaporean.

Indra

I am asking the same questions being due in Oct, but I have an EP myself.  The situation, however, is the same for both Ep and DP.

Before you go to the hospital for the delivery you will need a doc from your embassy stating that they accept citizenship of the baby.  It's a standard form and you shouldhave no trouble getting it.  All the other info above is correct.  Without it certain nationalities can have trouble being allowed to give birth, I am told, though I find it hard to imagine the authorities putting a 7cm dilated woman on a plane home!!

Passport can only be issued after the birth because, as you say, they will need a photo and the name of the baby!!  Also DOB!  I have been told there is a photographer who comes round after the baby is born and takes photos for you with a special camera mounted above the baby's cot.  I am planning on getting several sets of these photos just to send to rellies overseas as well as for all the paperwork etc.

When my friends did this, they got the birth cert first, then passport, then DP.  Though it would be very useful to get birth cert and DP at the same time!  You also need to give your own embassy the Sgp birth cert so they can issue you with your own country birth cert, done at the same time as the passport.

My wife just had a baby in Singapore..and going through the formalites.

1. Nothing to do till the child is born.
2. Some Hospitals register the birth directly & others just issue a birth cert.
3. You would then have to get the baby's travel document readied from the concerned High-comm. The birth cert, your EP/DP is usually sufficient to get the travel doc within a 2/3 days.
4. You then need to get the DP for the child. Go to the SIR along with the Child and Travel docs, your EP etc and the DP status for the child is given.
5. Not sure of the process if you want the child to be accorded with Sing-Citizenship.
