Seeing as maids and food is being discussed, got me wondering what do employers  do re providing toiletries etc for their live in maid. I  assume that toilet paper and tissues are provided.  What about soap, shampoo, personal toiletry items?? Other sundries??

I'll probably get dumped on for being too nice but we provide shampoo, soap, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, the works. She buys her own sanitary items but in the past I have provided them. And there's hot water in her shower. As a woman I think these things are important!

No you won't get dumped. I do exactly the same. Hygien is one of the priorities. Name it,from shampoo, personal toiletry inclusive of deodorant.

The employment contract which both my maid & I signed states that the employer is responsible for providing basic toiletries to the domestic helper on top of paying her monthly salary.  Therefore, every month I give my maid a new bottle of shampoo, some soap, shower gel, a new toothbrush and some toothpaste.  I also make sure that she has lots of anti-bacterial liquid soap in the kitchen because I want her to wash her hands regularly before and after she prepares our meals, takes the garbage out etc. etc.  I also buy her sanitary napkins for her.

I agree with Ha and Bubba.  Hygiene is very important.  I don't think these basic toiletry items cost very much and it's no skin off our noses to provide them to our maids.

I provide our help with these items because they are basic neccessities that, for her, would cost up to 1% of her salary. Imagine paying $80 - $100 for a toothbrush!!

Try hiring a full time House Keeper in the UK and it will be the provision of a car you will be discussing not soap etc.
