How much a month do you need to make
to support a family of 3

wife
2 kids (14 and 18)

I would love to relocate to Singapore,
I will not be on an expat package but would love to run a little business from there.

What do you reckon should be my budget
for appartment, car,school

Thanks in advance for your inputs!

Firstly I think it depends on your expectations. Do you want to save money? Do you wish to maintain or approximate your lifestyle at home? To give you an idea of the cost of living look under properties here to give you an idea of rental and look up www.coldstorage.com.sg  to give you an idea of the cost of food. Schooling has been a topic in the last couple of days. Other factors are electricity(there is a website where you could do a rough estimate) and transport. What we spend for a family of five would be considered higher end I guess and much of it is paid by the company such as rental, schooling and transport. This would perhaps give you an idea:
Rental(3 bedroom)- $2500 to $5000 per month(Housing board apartments are cheaper)
Electricity- $200-$400 per month(we use more though)
Car-$1500 up per month rental, public transport and taxis are cheap though
Schooling- local(a couple of thousand? unsure) international school $10000 to $15000 per year
Groceries- have friends who use $200 or less per week, but we use $400 up per week(I'll be shot for this!)
Medical- expensive need insurance-unsure

Many of my friends live on a lot tighter budgets than our own and are very happy-it really depends on the type of compromises you are willing to take. We had been expats before in a difficult posting which I loved but now with more children I am unwilling to make the same sort of compromises we did then.

Because of the current economic downturn, condo prices has been falling like crazy. I got a 1700 sq. ft. condo with 3 bedrooms and a huge frontyard for $ 1,600 / month UNFURNISHED. It has all the anemities you can think of: swimming pool, sauna, gym, etc.
But it is not located close to CBD.

Food can be cheaper also if you mainly cook and don't get expensive stuff like fillet mignon everyday.

Cars are VERY expensive. A Honda Civic, brand new, cost approx. S$ 89,000.00. That includes tax, COE, Registration fee, etc. but NOT road tax.

I have a wife and kid and generally I can survive with about $ 4000 / month. More when my kid start going to school. :-D

There are many Cost Of Living Allowance (COLA) sources available to give you information you need.  Of course it depends upon whether you are a Champage & Caviar guy or a beer and pretzels guy!  Depends whether you are on an expat package or a local package.

You have probably read that at this point in time expat packages are becoming less prevalent due to business downturn and the cost and many expats are leaving.

Go to GOOGLE and seek "cost of living" or cost of living allowances in Singapore and you will get what you want.

It costs a lot to live here and EVEN MORE to live here WELL!  Depends if you are prepared to scrape along on the bottom or not.  And, why should you want to do that?  The timing is not good.  Wait if you can.
