If you do not mind the humidity,
paying $80K for a mid range car, censored press then it's not too bad.

Low income tax, beautiful girls, nice food...

It's small but it's very nice

I love it out here

It's my little paradise, really

Safety is an issue for me, also I am muslim so living in a muslim friendly country is important for me.

If you are adaptable to new places, people, climate and lifestyles...........

Singapore has been 'bashed' by many expats and I would like to speak up for my country.
I've travelled to many other countries and while I appreciate the beauty in foreign lands, I have as yet found my Shangrila.

My country has its good and bad points like other countries. What I lament is the lack of mountains, lakes, forests and countryside. Singaporeans take time getting used to as we are generally more concerned with self, family, friends, relatives and then others - in that order. One thing though, we are used to having people of different races living amongst us so we are not racists. I would say one of the best thing about Singapore is the way our government manages law and order. You and other expats will get equal attention and action like the locals pertaining to protection and justice.

Singapore is a 'fine' city ....
You'll be fined for spitting, littering, urinating in lifts, smoking in prohibited areas, parking along 'no-parking' zones, etc. The list is too long to mention...

As long as you do your work, don't mind the blank looks on Singaporeans' faces, like HBO movies, constrained living spaces, you will have no problem living in Singapore.

Go for it, Naive, and ignore the Singapore bashing that frequently inhabits this message board.  Living in Singapore provides great opportunities to travel and see other countries in Asia too. And the weather is a heck of alot better than Belgium; the sun shines pretty much everyday here!

Yes, you can be happy in Singapore. It does take time though. I've been here a year now and can honestly say that slowly I am beginning to feel at home.

Is Singapore worth considering if you want to settle down ?

Can you be happy if SG if you're planning
to stay at least 10 years here.

I am asking this because I am planning to start a business there

Naive, I hope to God you're not that naive.  Please tell me you are not basing your decision to start a business in Singapore by solely relying on the information you get here.  You're are going to have to (if you havent already) do a lot more research and information gathering through reliable and official sources such as the embassy, trade board, newspaper etc.  Good luck!

Hmn... I think happiness doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the location. It really depends on many factors.

I've been working at setting up a company for a year now. Depending on what type of company/business you are setting up be forewarned: The economic situation in South East Asia is anything but brilliant.

I would also recommend doing some research, perhaps visiting Singapore (if you haven't been here before) and trying to get an impression beyond the one of a tourist.

Good Luck!

Hi Naive,
I am Irish, living in Germany, currently also considering Singapore. I also work in IT. I think that our decisions would be made easier if we knew that there are people there in the same boat as us...and ready to have fun when  we arrive! When are you thinking about relocating there?
I am looking at March/April 2002.....

You can be happy anywhere if your life is good.  Singapore provides a relatively neutral background for life, with no major stresses, so it is easy to be content here.
