new computer: here or there?

I will be relocating from the US to Singapore soon and am in dire need of a new computer. Can anyone advise as to whether I should purchase here or wait until I arrive in Singapore. In other words where will I find the best price and selection?

Not sure if it'd worth sending a PC from overseas to Singapore. Had a bad experience with mine which was shipped from Indonesia. Believe the shipping company did not handle it well that the PC just died after it got here   Ended up buying another one. If you're not too picky and if it's only for a home use, I think u should be able to find something for about 1700 Sing Dollars (I paid mine for 1700 after fattening up its RAM to 132meg, it's an HP).

Another thing to consider is that shipping your PC from where you are to here may still be GST (goods and services tax) liable. Was informed that if we received shipment of goods with value of more than SGD 300 then you'll have to pay for the 3% GST (this info was received when the shipping company called me up to arrange for delivery, I suppose it is also valid for used items).

Buy one here. No risk in shipping and I can't think of any reason you would want to bring a computer from the States. Almost every component available in the US can be bought here for around the same price and all the top tier brands are here (Dell, Gateway, HP, etc.) with the notable exception of Micron. Plus, if you bring a monitor from the US, chances are it will probably be 110V.

Become familiar with Sim Lim Square and Funan Centre and you will never want for computer related goods!

Dell has special deals in the computer section of Straits Times periodically.  I bought one last week for Sing $1500 which was a much better deal than the Compaq I bought last year in the US.
