Does anyone know what the border procedures are for taking a SG registered car to Malaysia for a short trip?

What documents do I need to take?

Are there monies payable to Malaysia Immigration/Customs?

I here that there are road tolls on the highway; are they expensive?

I’ve had a look on the web without much success, any info would be appreciated!

Very simple, just fill in the immigration form and state your vechile number, not that they look. You only have to pay a few dollars, cheaper by the causeway if you want to visit JB, but quicker via tuas if you want to head north on the motorway and miss JB.

The tolls to KL are about $40 Ringitt, the main roads are fine, off of them the driving can be hazardous, due to the locals over taking skills.

That's all, oh and lock your car at service stations,

You will need the following:
- passport
- Malaysian Immigration/Customs Form (you can obtain this at the checkpoint)
- total tolls between SG and KL would be approx. SGD30. You must pay in Ringgit Malaysia. Petrol is approx. 50% cheaper than in SG, so the to some extent offsets the toll charges
- take a few RM50 notes as donations to the local boys in blue should they decide to pull you over for alleged speeding

You might find this URL useful:
http://www.***.com/asiaoverland2000/Bordersingmalay.html

Leaving Singapore:

- Immigration: Give the passports and the necessary cards (green card for EP/DP holders, work permit card, etc). Put in the cashcard into the machine to pay the tolls.

- Customs: drive slowly and be prepared to stop unless if the customs guy waves you through. They will also randomly check your fuel gauge for the 3/4 tank rule.

Entering Malaysia:

- Immigration: present the passport and the duly completed Malaysian immigration card. If you don't have the immigration card, pull over before the immigration booth and get the cards from the booth, fill in the cards and re-join the queue. Note that if you need visa to enter Malaysia, you need to apply for the visa in advance at the Malaysian high comm at Jervois Road, off River Valley Road.

- Customs: similar to when you're leaving Singapore. Drive slowly and be prepared to stop unless the customs guy waves you through.

Hope this helps. Thanks.

Just returned from a 1 week driving holiday in Malaysia.

Driving across, all you need is your passport and your green Singapore residency card.  If you can, try and get hold of and complete a Malaysian entry card before you set off from home, otherwise, as soon as you arrive at the Malaysian immigration post (coming from the Singapore side) and there is a queue, send a passenger (if you have one) to get out and get the immigration forms so you can fill them in while you're waiting.

One important thing that we didn't know is that you have to pay S$3.20 (it was S$3 something) as an entry and exit fee on the Singapore side at the Second Crossing (I don't know if it is the same at the old crossing).  To pay this, you need a Cashcard (they do not take credit card, nets or cash at the immigration booths) - if you don't have a cashcard, you have to park the car and go into the immigration building to pay the fee which of course takes time.  I don't know where you generally get these cashcards from, but my fortunately my wife had one from the local library, so the library is one option.

The toll roads are not expensive - its about  RM50 from Sing to KL.
