Can anyone advise on what the legal position is regarding  using car seats for infants in Singapore? Obviously it is safer to use one but is it compulsory by law to use one in private vehicles?  I see a lot of people  who have their infants on their laps, but just because they do it, doesn't make it legal.  Can anyone tell me what the situation is?

The legal position is :

1. In the front seat, all passengers must be belted up or be placed in a car seat. Children below the age of eight are not allowed in the front seat (without a car seat.)

2. All passengers in the back seats must use the seat belts if these are present.

Boardmanager, does that mean that a 5 year old can sit in the front as long as he/she is in a car seat?

Yes. Be sure the child seat is facing the right direction, though.

Empirically, it is often better to fasten the chid's car seat in the back, rather than the front which usually distracts the driver.

The safest place for a child is in the back seat.

You must never put a child in a car seat (front-facing or rear-facing) in a front passenger seat that is fitted with an airbag.

Car seats are required by law in many countries .. in fact in North America (and perhaps Australia as well) you cannot even take your child home from the hospital without an approved seat.
