We are moving to Singpaore this summer and our two boys (age 10 & 13) will be attending the American School in Woodlands.  Should we be considering living in Woodlands?  What are the pros & cons of that area?  (I'd love to hear from someone who actually lives in Woodlands.)

I don't live IN the Woodlands, but very close, and I've been here for long enough to hear all the pros and cons (10 years), SO.

If you are very active at the school, you will like living in Woodlands. If you live in the Orchard Rd. area, especially if you are not right near an MRT station, it will take you over one hour to reach the school, unless you use a taxi. That will be about $15 one way, and will not be easy during rush hours or rain. (They've told you it rains nearly every day, haven't they?) Other areas are closer, and if you have a car of your own, you will be able to get there in 20-30 minutes from just about anywhere.

IF your husband has to commute by MRT to downtown, or has to drive downtown or out to Jurong area, it will take him about one hour in fairly stressful conditions every morning. Since that is a daily occurrence, and your kids will be riding a bus in any case, it's not worth it unless you will be there a lot (In my opinion). If your husband travels a lot though, he won't have the commute that often, and it may not be a factor.

The Woodlands area has had a moderately high and consistent problem with burglaries. There have also been a few attempted kidnappings of elementary-age expat children in the area.

The plus side is having a neighborhood full of other Americans, with lots of kids to play with. They have block parties, great trick-or-treating, and caroling at Christmas. Most of the houses are huge, and many have small swimming pools.

You can find many of these things at the big condos that have lots of expats as well. If you plan to get involved in any other community organizations, such as the AWA, or spend a lot of time at the American Club, or get yourself a job you might not want to be so far out of town.

Hi Evie,
My family does live in the Woodlands with our 13 + 15 year old daughters. Now let me give you my feelings on why we live here.
1.My daughters are very active in school sports so by living here they are home 10 minutes after practice not 1 hour after they must take the activities bus to downtown.
2. I do take the MRT, I actually enjoy it since I am usually by myself it is actually a quiet time to read or look out at the beautiful sites! (and I do carry a folding umbrella with me at all times)
3. My husband does work in the Jurong area and it has never taken him 1 hour to get to work even in the worst rain or traffic. I sometimes drive him to work so then I have the car!
4. We have a wonderful provisioner, that delivers groceries to us everyday! They just call me in the morning and ask what I want, boy how easy is that?
5.We have heard of some burglaries, but then my friends on the East Coast had their house broken in also....so you see it happens everywhere on this wonderful Island.
One of the reasons we like living here is because of the tight community feeling we have here. We do have some local neighbors but we have found that they pretty much keep to themselves...and yes we have tried to include them.
Evie, if you have any other questions about the area or the American School please feel free to e-mail me.
By the way my 13 yr.old is in the 8th grade right now. If your son has any questions ask away!! Hope this helps!

Evie,

We are moving out of our rent house which is mid way between the city and Woodlands.

It is a good compromise for the family and  yourself in that you are able to get into the city to have lunch or dinner with your husband and also get involved with scholl activities.

Hi Evie,
I also live in the Woodlands, just around the block from Pat.
My kids walk to school, there is a bus which picks up in this area, but it only takes about 5 minutes to walk and my kids are 12 and 14 so they walk it.
It takes my husband about 25 minutes in traffic to get to work in Toa Payoh. 17 minutes without traffic.
Only con as I see it is that it takes time or the car to get down to the American Club.  I shop all over the place, so no matter where I lived that would take time and a car.
I find the Woodlands comfortable and friendly and being able to get to the school just by walking is a bonus for me and the kids.
Good Luck!
