We may move to Singapore (from USA) very soon. Does anybody knows if there's any Japanese supermarket?  I know Yaohan, SOGO closed already and Daimaru is going to close.  I also knows some of the local supermarket such as Cold Storage have some Japanese food but its very small section and its not enough for us.   Does anybody knows about any Japanese supermarket?  Thanks for your help !

I think that the supermarket at Paragon also caters to the Japanese.

Yes, Isetan has a good supermarket, although a bit pricey. The Paragon one is also very good. The Cold Storage in Takashimaya has a larger selection of Japanese goods compared to other Cold Storage stores. You will also find Takashimaya also has a good "depachika" with some good specialities. Both Takashimaya and Isetan have quite regular regional fares with their specialities.

Overall there is a large Japanese community here and it should not be too difficult to settle in. There are also plenty of Japanese restaurants, not quite to Tokyo standard although one or two are excellent. In general prices of Japanese goods are market up and are quite expensive - much more than Tokyo prices.

Most Japanese here go to Daimaru at River Valley Road.  Huge Japanese variety and also a Japanese food court.

I thought Daimaru was closing?  Could be wrong.

Daimaru is closing but the last news I heard was that the supermarket and food court will remain and possibly relabeled.

Susan - Been busy with a project for the past year and a half.  How's your 4-legged friend ?  Still showing a long face ? ( that's about the extent of my equine humour)

I didn't know that there is a japanese supermarket here who does deliver, it was referred to me by my japanese friend, somewhere in South Buona vista.  Their prices is a little bit cheaper than known groceries, they get their goods direct from Japan, been in this business for more than 10 years.  Email me if you're in Sg and i'll give you the contact details. Most of the japanese know this shop.

The selections are pretty thin.  Daimaru
River Valley road was the best. Too bad
about the closure.   The selections at
Jason's Market, and Cold Storage is weak.
I hardly call 1 aisle a great shopping experience.
The merchandise also tends to be quite old.
Food that have expiration dates close to the
current date is not what real Nihonjin(Japanese)
want.  They never sell anything in Japan that
will expire within 8 months of the date stamped
on products.

You will just have to make do with purchasing
items that are available or even visit a Korean
grocery near Bencoolen street to get anything
decent.

Takashimay every once in a while has prefecture
food fairs; but that's not something you can count
on for weekly goods.

The Japanese restaurants are average, made
by Singaporeans for Singaporeans.   There are
a couple of outstanding ones;but on the whole
you might be disappointed in them.  The ones
in the hotels are usually sure things.

 Cheers.

South Buona Vista Centre (Pasir Panjang Road)- there's a small but specialised Japanese store on the first floor.
