We arrive mid july with our 5 year old girl and 2 yr twin boys.  Eldest is due to go to OFS .  We will not have car and was planning to walk her to school but concerned that living close to OFS will not be so child friendly. Seems like it might be better for family  to live further out but do people use the underground to take their kids to school? are there steps? (for my double push chair), I don't think she would go on a school bus without me?  what do other non-drivers do??
Also, don't kids pick up bugs from swimming all the time?  one of my boys gets a cold every time he goes near a public pool.
Thanks for any advice

Hi

I have two toddlers and live central.  We live in a condo and it is very child friendly.  My kids go down to the play area morning and afternoon where all the kids meet at the same time and they have a ball.  Also, taxi's are very cheap so it may be easier for you to jump into a taxi to take your daughter to school instead of walking to the MRT with double push chair and your daughter.

Also, will you be getting a helper/maid?  If so you can then accompany your daughter to school and leave the twins at home. Makes life a little easier. Just a suggestion.

Good luck with your move.

public tranportation here (buses, trains, etc) is very reliable and very affordable. otherwise taxis are also very easy to find and very affordable. you can even arrange with some taxi drivers to take children to and from daily for a monthly charge(i remember from a post posting a few weeks ago)

my daughter swim daily and doesnt get sick(unless somethings going around school) its hot and humid here so always the right time to swim(unless its raining). anyways it was found that its a myth how our moms and grandmas used to tell us to not go outside in the cold with wet hair. sceientist found that it makes no difference. you can not bring on a cold yourself. its a bug/virus that causes a cold, nothing we do to create a cold. swimming or not if your childs playmate has a cold, theres a good chance it will pass to your child. the pool does not encourage it. most pools here are not heated(no need as the sun does it) so its not usually a warm enviorment where things spread easily.

If you live near OFS you should be able to walk there OK.  Singapore sometimes has some pram-unfriendly pavements, but I think around the OFS area they are OK.  There are always pedestrian crossings too so crossing shouldn't be dangerous for a person with a pram plus child walking.

You can take a lift down to the MRT if you use it, but even if you live somewhere else you'd still have to do some walking once you got off the MRT to get to school.

Buses aren't so pram-friendly so you might want to avoid them.

Or, like above says, you could take a cab.  If it isn't too far a cab wouldn't work out very expensive (probably on a par with the school bus fees), although if you booked one every morning the costs would mount up.

If it was my decision, I'd try for living walking distance from school and just get a cab on those mornings when it is absolutely throwing it down with rain (mornings are not too bad for downpours, but they do happen from time to time).  If OFS is anything like our school, you'll find yourself having to go there almost weekly for assemblies, certificate giving and things like that, so living close won't be a bad thing.

You also might find that after being at school for a few weeks your daughter might want to get the bus - when she meets other children who get bussed to school it won't seem so daunting to her (or you!  Wink )

Pools should be OK - ours is fairly well looked after and nobody I know has ever caught anything from using it.  Some people report that their children seem to get ill quite often when they first get here but ours were fine.  If you do find that yours get ill, be prepared to fend off doctors prescribing antibiotics for everything from the common cold to a burnt finger ........you have been warned  Cheesy

I hope your move goes well

Hi OP

I also had reservations about my 5 year old being on the school bus, however he really enjoys it. Most school buses have an 'aunty' on board who helps the children with their backpacks and seatbelts etc... As a previous poster said, your daughter will probably soon have friends on the bus too, so you might want to consider using the bus after you've all settled in over here.
