A stupid question

My 6 month old boy is suffering with a bad cold and stuffy head. Thought about putting vapo rub on his cheat, but it says from age 2 on jar.

Has anyone used it on a younger child or know if it's harmful?

Any alternatives?

Hi

I asked my pharmacist back home if I could use it as well on my baby who had a chesty cold and was told no.

I used a baby vicks instead, can you go to a chemist here and see if they have anything for babies?

A chemist told me I could just dilute regular vicks with vaseline I think? But I just bought a jar of baby vicks instead. It's called Baby Balsam.

If you rub a tiny tiny amount of the vicks on his clothing (but not where he can touch it and rub in his eyes) it's okay.  I asked the same question back in Australia and was told to do this.  On the skin can be too strong but on clothing okay.  I used to put a little on the shoulder part of the clothing where it's least likely to be touched by baby but can smell it.

at night time I used to put some vicks in hot water and let it evaporate into the air - it made it easier to breathe

Ive got these little capsules which have a similar effect to Vicks. They are called Karvol, and all you do is pierce one and dot the liquid on your baby's clothes, bedsheet or even a tissue in the corner of his cot.  I got them in the UK though, not sure if they are available here - maybe they are called something different here.

Karvol is available here.

Substitute for baby Vicks are Snuff Baby (?) or something like that. Go to any Watson's or Guardian and they'll help you there.

Good luck.

Try EuckyBear.  I put it on a tissue and under pillowcase or rub a little on chest and back.

Karvol is good as above poster mentioned. Eucalyptus in a bowl of boiling water placed in the room is also good. You can also buy a spray called medic spray which is fabulous for clearing up blocked noses in little ones. Try propping your baby up a little bit in the cot and use fess little ones nose drops to help get rid of the mucous. Good luck!

Best idea is to put it on the surrounding sheets, etc, but not too close and never on the child's skin at that age, this is because it goes through the skin and can be way too strong and overpowering.
