They will all steal given the opportunity. Happens everywhere in every walk of life, whether it's a maid nicking a cup of rice or detergent from the kitchen or an office worker helping themself to that extra pen and notebook from the office. It is only realistic to be aware that it can (and does) happen. It's just one of the inconveniences of having a maid. If you catch 'em at it, they are fair game for dismissal. If you don't, then less hassle for you until you do!

My point is, if you knowingly invite a "thief" to live/work with you, you get what you deserve. Dont hate the player, hate the game. In this case, the player is the maid. Dont sit on this board and bitch about it when you knowlingly put yourself in the situation. [This message has been edited by krak (edited 30-11-2006).]

Be careful when your maid is going to leave your employment. A few years ago a family on our condo were leaving Singapore and the maid decided to go back home. She asked her employer if she could bake a cake as all her friends wanted to have a leaving party just before the maid was due to fly home. The employer said 'yes' and the cake was duly baked. When the cake was cooling on the countertop, the employer's son (who didn't realise it was the maid's own personal cake) decided to eat a slice. As he cut into it with a knife.....he found some jewellery. The maid had taken the ma'ams gold necklace and hidden it inside the cake, knowing that there was little chance it would be found there! (Some employers do check the maid's suitcases just before they head off for the airport).

to easy: drunk with 10 beer? Geez... never come to Brazil then. People routinely drink 20-30 while chatting in bars. Swollen bladder, yes. Drunk, no.

No matter how much your trust your maid you are crazy to leave valuables in the open. Not only is a maid living in your house, there are often workers and journeymen around. Why would you want to put your maind in the situation of explaining herself if a plumber made off with the crown jewels? We got a fireproof safe and all the important family records and expensive jewellry is in it. It is in a locked cabinet. If we have to dash it's one turn of a key and out the door and we know all our most important stuff is with us. We are always making mountains out of molehills around here.

Agree with previous response. The maid gets 'a' day off and gets drunk. Good on her, if i worked six days a week in a foreign country id get wacked as well (hang on a minute?). Fact - it was her day off. Fact - she was returning home, not to work when she blew chunks. Fact - she may not clean the best but apparently she is good with a small child. Lady, you should honestly get a life. You have a maid. 20% of the worlds population lives below the poverty line. People work hard, they get ancie and like to cut loose once in a while (tho something tells me you arent prone to such erratic and insidious behaviour are you?) Maybe try loosening up a little. If shes crap at work sack her. Get yourself a robot, which it seems you want. I gather you didnt ask if she was alright or helped her out when she was chundering, haha that would be dirty work wouldnt it.

OP: while 'snoopdogs' post is so inane that we shouldn't encourage it by responding, I just want to say that I really hope you're treating it the way you should; that is, good for a laugh and then ignored! Moronic.........watch our Snoopdog, if you move your head too quickly that halo of yours might slip down and choke you!

Some maids do go all out to steal, and cover for each other by handing stolen good over to another maids. They work like syndicates. However, most nick bits and pieces of small items from you like some of you do from the office.

someone has been very, very naughty. A little bare hand spanking by sir will do the trick. If you are lucky she won't tell ma'am and continue to be "naughty".

I had a maid who came home drunk on a couple of occassions and there was once she came home at 430am! She had to get up at 7am the next day and care for my 16 month- old baby. I fired her soon after. Yes, I agree that maids are human beings too. However, would you be terribly upset to know that a pilot had a hangover just before his flight? Likewise, any sensible working parent would be concerned that their child is being taken care of by someone who has a hangover. For the safety of my child, I don't care about being labelled selfish, especially by some people on this forum. You do what your gut feeling as a parent tells you.

OP, what is the update with your maid? Just curious and want to know if there is a closure in this situation. If I am in your position, I will consider carefully if helper is capable and responsible to care for my child in my absence during the day. True, we need to respect her day off and her rights to pleasure but not at the expense of your child's well being. You just need to observe her and perhaps more "spot checks" are required during the day , coming home unannounced to see if friends are over for a quick drinks...also have you been checking your drinks inventory? ?

My god, she gets one day off every two weeks? Imagine for a minute what that would feel like. She deserved her one night out to try to forget about how mundane her life is. So, she's not a perfect housekeeper. Who is? Geez, I thought I had it rough when I was a nanny who had 2 days off a week. It's not easy being 'hired help', you know. How about try being human towards her? She is human, you know. I feel extremely sorry for her. Step off your high horse and treat her as a person.

i'm doubtful if those who defend the behaviour of the maid in question, will do what they say if it's their own maid's doing
