Can anyone help me?

I am trying to find an american birthday cake.  I have no idea what makes it different to other cakes.  My american husband hasn't had one for years and is dying to have one again.  In england pretty much any cake will do but he's had enough of me trying to find a substitute for his american birthday cake.

Does anyone know where i can buy one or know anyone that bakes them?
Any help is much appreciated.

i am an american myself and must wonder what an american birthday cake is?Huh maybe a specail recipe only his mom could make? or a shop in usa that baked great and he can not match that taste.

all birthdays in usa are the same as anywhere else. plain cake with white icing and candles on top? or cake with jam? or chocolate? or just a cupcake? or if he loves pumpkin or pecan pie or apple pie so be it. maybe he wants a pie instead of cake?

same birthday cakes in usa are sold in england. i do not know what an american birthday cake is?

just like a wedding cake. there is not typical americain wedding cake. it is the same cake you buy, make or order in england. i lived in england and all weddings and birthdays tasted the same in either country.

A similar thing to tartan paint?

I lived in America for many years and don't remember birthday cakes being anything different!

Tartan paint is traditionally used to lay a trail to lure a haggis into a trap. It must be painted from left to right or the haggises ( haggai?) will run awa.

Americans here always make a Betty Crocker cake from a box and decorate with bought icing. You can buy it all here. Have been to lots of American kids birthdays, and have seldom seen any variation on this theme...

could the difference be the icing?  There are three main types - buttercream, fresh cream and sugary-coated icing (don't know the exact name).  maybe he means the last type.

Go to Cold Storage and look for any cake mixes with the "Betty Crocker" name brand on them.

Choose your flavor, follow directions on the back of the box.

get him to tell you exactly what's wrong with the cakes here and it might help you find the right ingredients.

Is his mum available to ask?

Thank you so much for all the replies.

I think the difficulty might just be with him.  We've been to lot's of bakeries together and he can never find what he's looking for.  I think he must be hankering after a specific cake his mum used to buy him.  I can't think of anything else.  I'll try the betty crocker mix and see how it goes(i'll keep my fingers crossed, ha ha).

I'm glad its not just me that found this whole thing confusing  Wink

Are you actually married to this man?  If I wasn't sure what my husband wanted, I would ask him before I came on here for advice!
