I'm an expat here from the States, been here for around a year or so but don't really have any friends other than some colleagues I have dinner/drinks with occasionally.  Never really made the effort to meet people since I was never really in this position before (new city, etc).

I want meet some guys who are chilled out and just like to hang.  Preferably single but not a big deal.  I'm single and 30 years old but still live like a 20 year old.  It'd be good to have some dudes who hang around, play Xbox, try to hook up with girls, stuff like that.

Let me know, or maybe there is some advice you can give me on how to go about meeting people on my own.

If you want to hook up with girls, better get down to OT one night.

Failing that you can always find and play X-box games with the dudes at any arcade. But maybe 15 year olds acting like 30 year olds

Having followed this board for many years, it is safe to say that most users are women or old men. To find men your age, maybe try one of the sporting clubs (cliche I know, but it usually works!) or a business group. There are a few sports clubs at Turf City (rugby, football etc..) which migth be a good starting point. Also, maybe try Hash House Harriers?

Users of this board are all kinds.

I'm American, 32 and single.

Just asking for friends (or mates, as you hear here all the time) on the internet is kind of lame dude.

The poster above was right.  Get into a sport, any sport.  Or a club or something.  Make friends the old fashioned way - in real life over some common interest.  Try wakeboarding, or running, or basketball, or rugby, or something.

I dont think it's lame at all.

It's just that meeting peeps online, there's a bit less involvement, less of an investment, so you tend to be a bit more easy-come-easy-go. I mean, the very reason you meet someone at a soccer sailing club or whatever is because you gravitated there on account of a common interest or common friend in the first place, i.e. some overlap. Online is a bit more artificial however, you're colliding 2 persons together and then you have to wait and see if it'll work.

Still, having said that, I'm single too, bloke, not gay, and even though I have quite an active social life, I find that most of my male peers are married or have girlfriends, which makes it that much harder for me to go on trips abroad with them, hang out, check out the local talent, that sorta thing.

So I get you OP, I'm in the same situation.

I realize its kind of odd asking to meet people on a board like this but I figured there are other people like me out here who may be trolling these ***.  And it looks like I am right.

As far as your suggestions about finding people in rugby, wakeboarding, running, or basketball - I probably wouldn't have much in common with those guys.  I'm not a big sports person, I'm more the kind of person who'd rather play pool at a bar, not the type who'd get up early on a Saturday morning to play rugby.  So it makes finding people at sports kind of pointless.  Guys like me I guess know who they are.  Have you seen the movie Knocked Out or the show Entourage?  That's more the way I'm used to hanging out with my friends back home, you know just bumming around, hanging out, not really doing things that require tons of energy.  The only football or basketball I play is on the Xbox.  If weed were legal here, I'd be a pothead.  I'm not a jock, and have no desire to become one.  Put it that way.

Um, ok.  Yeah, you're nothing like me.  I have no advice for you.  Find some slacker friends however you can.  Good luck.

"...If weed were legal here, I'd be a pothead..."

To Word Up,

I think smoking pot WOULD be the solution to your problem.

1. The Sing authorities will introduce you to a whole block of guys your age with loads of time to do nothing but hang out together.
2. You'll soon get to the bottom of whether or not you're really gay. Or at least whether you like to pitch or catch, even if sports aren't your thing.

Good luck.

Don't mind the haters, they don't get it I guess.  Weed = gay... good one whoever said that, real smart...  And I guess some are too yolked up to get the Entourage reference.  I am moving there in early Jan. and am cool with kickin it and having some drinks and finding girls.  I have done muay thai for years and will find a gym in Sing, but don't necessarily need to hang with the same people when I am heading out.   I'd be down with chillin and hitting a club or two.

I'll hit you up on here when I get into town early next month.

All this while, I assumed all expats lead an exciting life. Most locals here either go to movies or hunting down their favourite food. It surprises me expats are as lonely as the locals. Hmmm...yet we still see posts hovering around 'expats vs locals' subjects. Sad

Hey another American guy,

Keep your loser Jock culture to yourself.

As for the OP being a "slacker", he sounds like one of those guys who did the really popular SNL "Chronicles of Narnia" in Xmas 2005-

it was about two guys who "wake up in the late afternoon" and use "Google map" the find the "Dofus route" to the cinema to watch the Chronicles.

Hmm....choice- be a Jock and have a superiority complex or be a "slacker" and make it big.
