I have been offered a job at an american consulting company's singapore office. They have offered me a starting pay of 5000 pm with a10% annual bonus. I'm a fresh biz grad with 3 years of IT consulting experience in the US before i did my MBA from NUS. While i am not expecting a 5 figure pay check, i do feel 5000 is too low for the kind of role that i am to do. The role involves leading a small team of four people and direct interaction with the client. My sources in the industry tell me that fresh grads from the US make at least 40% more than what i am making for the same kind of role. I do wonder whether my nationality(i'm Malaysian Chinese) also has a role to play in the final figure?

Your citizenship does not matter here in SG
Your experience is more important
If you a consultant in IT 5k may be a good start. Don't forget there's bunch of people fresh graduate from other countries willing to take half of that amount.
Take it, at least you will get some experience and exposure, In 24 month look for another job...

For an MBA graduate with 3 years biz experience its on the low side no doubt. When I was in the consulting biz in SGP a few years back we paid MBAs at least 8k a month, and that was in the economic downturn, and they werent expected (initially) to manage projects. But unfortunately an NUS MBA does not rate alongside INSEAD, Wharton, etc. To be honest u could probably get the same $ as just an IT consultant with no MBA but 3 years experience.

sounds like you're being offered a local package. even PhD grads on local package get that salary so you should be ok.

There is a name for the role that you mention (leading a team and interaction with client). It's called a tech lead. Given the market here, for a tech lead that kind of salary is okayish. Do consider that starting salary for some software developers is arnd 3500 (Non-Locals (read into that what you will) with at least 3 yrs of relevant software experience). Your MBA (you did not mention specialization) is not a consideration for a Tech lead role. If you want a role that utilizes your MBA seek elsewhere, IT departments are at best a skill honing ground (2 yrs max) not career building ones.
