Something quite strange happened in a Clarke Quay pub the other night. We went in for a drink and later asked for a bill and handed over our credit card. However, it took more than 30 or 40 minutes before they would return our card. I even went up there twice and asked the staff where is our credit card and they would reply: we don't know. I'm not saying they were necessarily copying the credit card in the backroom but it all sounds very suspicious. I called the CASE and they said we should cancel the card to avoid any fraud. It's a lot of hassle and I didn't think this could happen in Singapore. Has anyone experienced anything similar here?

Something similar happened to a friend of a friend in the states. He had taken his wife out to a fancy restaurant, paid the check with his card, and got his card back about 20 mins later. He had thought it odd that it took so much time, but he didn't give it much thought. 3 months later he found plenty of small transactions being charged on his card. Luckily he discovered this in time and alerted Amex. They canceled his card and he didn't have to pay for any of the fraudulent transactions. If you are using an amex card you can report this incident to them and they will monitor any suspicious activities on your card. If your card was a chip embedded card, then you don't need to worry as they are supposed to be un-copyable.

It's quite normal over here for credit cards to get "lost" on the way, or similarly having to wait a long time for your change. It's just poor service, nothing more than that.
In any case, it doesn't need 40 minutes to copy a credit card number, it can be done in a few seconds.
All you need to do is monitor your statement very carefully, you can get a refund for any charge that is not proven not yours.

What's the big deal about taking a picture of a credit card... I mean how much extra information does it give you?

if you don't want to let anyone get that information then you should never use your credit card. My point is that if you have paid with your card then someone already has all the above. Why worry if they take a photo of it?

they need the other number on the back of the card. ( forget what it is called) If you photograph the card they have it.

yes you are all right about the details from a picture. if they take off with your card for a half hour they can do a lot of damage with it. if they take a picture, they can have access to your card for the next month or so til you get your bill and figure out it was not you who made all those online or phone purchases. my friend cancelled his card after he left the store just in case. why would this cashier need a picture of your card? that is not how card purchases are done. he clearly took it for a reason and my friend was not going to sit tight and wait to see what that reason was.

Does it not seem odd to you that someone would want a picture of your credit card? In a restaurant, you will get a receipt so if you were charged thousands and needed to get a lawyer to clear you. With a lot of work, money and hassle you could prove where you were at the time of the mysteries charges and who your waiter was as the receipts sometimes say who you were served by.
The picture is a very sneaky way. That was in USA so cameras in the pizza place. The worker can easily say he was just smsing someone about their pizza order if he was questioned by camera man or security. He would wait a few days or hours to play with your money and by then you have forgotten about him, have no idea he took a photo(as you thought he was just smsing someone) and you are stuck with no idea of who your thief is?
Yes they can write it but you may see them. someone may see the paper they write on. A camera in the corner of the cieling may catch you. nother worker may see you? It takes too long. Atheif will just snap a picture fast while you are not looking.
I can not believe you do not find this a little strange? Why would anyone need a picture of your (you are a strangers) card? What does he need it for?

I mean really, you would not wonder or be the least bit suspicious of why a stranger needs a souvenir picture of your card?

Wow, so many replies within few ours... Someone even from that same pub. It strikes me odd because it wasn't a busy Saturday night or anything but a weeknight and not so many customers. The whole place is little bit shady, I visited their restroom and found out they have no running water. They also have no running water at the bar... I guess I won't be going back and also have to cancel the card now. Btw, the number on the back of the credit card is called CVV2 code and they would need that to use your card on the Internet.
