hi,
my wife and i are thinking of moving to singapore... our housing budget is about 3000 SGD per month or less...
will we be able to get a condo of anout 1000+ sq. ft. fot this much? we've always dreamed of a semi-detached/landed house a bit further from the city centre... does anyone think that might be doable in this budget?

You will have a reasonable choice of 2 bedroom condo's in non central areas for that budget but will struggle to get a landed property. At most you might find an inter-terrace house and in original (shabby) condition so minimal garden or privacy

is this true even if we decide to live further away from the central district? we aren't particularly averse to commuting a bit every day...

You will get something reasonable for $3k if you go local and further out.

You could look in an area called the upper East coast, say around Kew Heights, Kew Crescent or a great area called Siglap - it is quite far from the CBD though. You could easily get a large semi for about $3000 but you will not get a pool. I hope that this helps.

To Just Dreaming
To get the most value make sure you rent by going direct and not using an Agent. Agents here are basically useless and even though the Landlord pays the commission (1 months rent) this is effectively passed on to you. Best to work Direct with landlord and by pass the Agent. Will get better Semi-D for your $3K budget this way.
Good Luck!

LLs have given up advertising on their own since all their responses are from agents who are representing the expats. Seems like expats have blind faith in agents and the ones on this forum advising to bypass the agents only form 0.0001% of expats who will actually do so. Whe I advertised my condo for rent, I did not receive a single direct call from an expat. 100% were agents.

thanks all...
do LLs advertise directly in the classifieds?... are there any other ways in which one could find direct leases?...
and what is the quality of life in siglap like?... are there public spaces (gardens, jogging/cycling paths, parks or beaches)? and are there places to go out to eat and hang out (pubs, restos and the like)?...

Just to let you know....i have been living in a 3 bedroom semi in Siglap. We are paying $2200 and our lease is up in 4 weeks. We got an email from our landlady while on holiday last month and because of the recent rental trend she has decided to up our rent to $5000......surfice to say, we will not be renewing our rent

despite all the previous posts, I'd say you can get a landed at this rate, have a friend that lives in a large semi-D in the paya lebar area (yes it's pretty far but that's a different discussion), he's was paying 2200 per mth but if i remember correctly, he recently (last 3 mths) renewed the contract for a larger amt but definitely still under 3K. Place is pretty original but i'm sure you can get a newer place for 3K if you settle for something smaller like an intermediate terrace.

oh, and Siglap should not be considered a cheaper area, it's kind of the Holland Village equivalent of the East.

I looked at Siglap recently and found nothing decent (landed) for 10k.... and I kid you not.

No way is the East Coast remotely upmarket. Landlords there are asking top dollar for the first time ever, but it is really not a top area, despite the East coast Park and the proximity to Changi. The top area is still the Holland vicinity (forget HV, it is a bohemian enclave, but it is not posh. It's the GCB areas like Leedon, Bin Tong, Victoria that are the ultimate, along with Chatsworth and some parts of Cluny and Tanglin
