We have recently downsized, and moved away from our old expat area due to increased rents and more kids reaching school ages.

We've been a member of a group since we came to Singapore 5 years ago, but now that we've moved away and can no longer afford to go out for the expensive dinners and weekends away we seem to be losing touch.

I thought it was just my imagination that we were being snubbed, but now my 8 year old has come home from school saying that T said that they couldn't be friends any more as his mum had said we  were "poor and common". T's mum can take a run and jump, but how do I explain this to my heartbroken child?

Wow, sure sucks to be you, hey?  Cheesy Cheesy

Poor attempt at a wind-up.  Try to be more creative next time.  I'll give this one a 2 on a scale from 1 - 10.   Tongue

Also, you're copying your homework.  This one was tried last month.

I'm going to have to give you a D.

Why do people assume EVERYTHING on her is a wind up? Surely we've all met people like this here? (The ex-council house ones are usually the worst)

tell your kid to go back to her friend and say "my mum said she saw your Dad coming out of Orchard Towers". That will soon put the snotty mother in her place.

That's right, I am the snooty mother.  I didn't fight tooth and nail to get out o' me council house to come to Singapura to be dragged back down with the riff raff here.  If you can't keep up - hop it and shut up!!  Tongue

because most people don't really say things to their kids like "you can't play with them because they are common"........or if they do, then those people are very few and far between.

I take posts like this with a pinch of salt because even if they do happen to be true (which I doubt), what could I do about it?  The OP would know that the other people were scum and not bother with them anymore - end of story.

Oh I don't know, my niece said to me "Are you common?" when she was tiny. Turned out my father-in-law had said it (which I was bloody annoyed about as was hardly Mr Classy himself).

(Or it could be that she was just precociously perceptive  Wink)

Did I misinterpret your post?  Because it reads as if you're saying that this place is full of snobs and the people from the council houses are the worst.

Am I alone in enjoying the irony of that remark?
