I want to try a Jamie Oliver recipe - broccoli and cauliflower canneloni. However, the recipe uses anchovies but I would rather not as Im not a fish person.

Would it make much of a difference if I omitted them? What would a suitable replacement be?

Well the anchovies are going to be there for for saltyness and some underlying fish taste so you'll need to look at your seasoning. I'm no expert but wouldn't capers fit here ?

With broccoli and cauliflour then you haven't got too much taste and what sauce are you using ? cream or a tomato based one ?

You'll need something to balance the weak tastes of your vegetables with your sauce and any cheese you are using.

Capers might fit the bill but the anchovies make the dish.
If you don't like a strong fish taste try soaking the anchovies in milk for about 20 mins before putting them into the mix.

Yes, it will make a great difference. Note, however, that in most recipes anchovies should be used sparingly. You should get a hint of the taste of anchovies only. Like you taste them, but do not directly identify it as anchovies.

There is no good replacement for anchovies. They make a great ingredient for many dishes. Unfortunately they are quite expensive here in Singapore.

Thanks for all the answers.  I think Ill just go with trial and error until I find a good taste to replace the anchovies.
