that's a tricky one because one year olds tend to eat everything you give them or throw it on the floor! I was thinking one of those old style teddies or some kind of christening type mug thing, but neither seem very special.
How about making an apointment with a photo studio, all getting dressed up and having a family photo taken on the big day. That'd be something to remember in the years to come.

If you plan to keep it forever, then probably best it's small. What about a vintage matchbox size car that can be used as an ornament for his room, or quality wooden toy (although wooden things tend to be more bulky). Or something from Singapore if you are living here now but unlikely to when he's older, so it's memorable from that point.

How about a silver cup? You could have it engraved with his name and birthdate, and take a photo of him using it on his first birthday?

I'd favor a special gift which he might not appreciate now, but will appreciate later.
What about a really good quality bible? You could have it inscribed with a special message from you, so that he'll always see you as someone who guided him spiritually.

Get him a simple ride-on toy he pushes with his feet. He will have fun with it every day. Silver mug will sit and tarnish. Wooden train set is great for 2nd birthday onwards.

Something loud and noisy usually worked well with my children, nieces and nephews, I liked the idea of a sit and ride. I wouldn't be buying something special as this is basically giving yourself a gift, your son will definatly not apprecaite it.
