what's with people biting their medals for the cameras? is it to show that it's real gold? or do they think it's one of those chocolate gold coins?

I think they're trying to be amusing biting the medal, it doesn't really work though. I'll let them off that, as they manage to maintain their dignity during the medal ceremony, resisting the urge to bounce up and down like soccer benders do.

yup we certainly are the biting thing is probably one of those things - they all think they're the first to do it......a bit like those people who make a peace sign every single time they have their photos taken either that, or some wag from the Olympic committee has told them that they ARE made of chocolate and so the choccy starved athletes can't wait to try it to see if it's true.

Anyone can come up with an observation.
It's taking the time to log into this website and write about it that sets you apart from other cyber athletes.
Well done!

As a gold medal winner myself, it's got a lot to do with them as if they're chocolate medals wrapped in gold foil.
It's just a joke. Shame it has to be explained.

Since it is in China, you want to make sure the medals are real & have some quality...

Since it is in China, you want to make sure the medals are real & have some quality... There we go with the China bashing again. How ordinary. Are you sure that biting the gold medal just came about in this Beijing Olympics? Perhaps Goldmedallist can throw some light on this.

The gold medals I've won have always been silver plated with a layer of gold - I've had this confirmed by my insurance company when I had them insured. I won all mine for swimming.
That being said, I do know a gold medal olympian and he says the same of the one he won in Sydney. Apparently if any country tried giving out PURE/SOLID gold medals, it'd cost too much for what is already an olympian bill for being a host nation.

Aren't they just being encouraged by the press photographers to jump on the Nadal bandwagon for a good photo op?
