Are you all going to be ploughing your money into these preference shares?  5% fixed dividend doesn't sound bad to me.  Better than the 1% interest you're lucky to get on a fixed deposit.  What's the downside?

if you don't understand the difference between "pref shares" and "deposits" don't invest in the pref shares.  There are valid reasons why one pays 5% and the other 1%.  Once you understand the reasons, you can then decide for yourself, and based on your financial position and needs, which is the more suitable investment

I've thought for a while corp bank bonds were worth a punt.  I'd have a similar view on pref shares.  I'd be prepared to wait a while to get out though.
