I'm an aspiring Ivy League student (Columbia),and I was wondering if there are any members on here that can share their experiences with their education. How did the degree treat you afterwards? A gift that keeps on giving, or in your case, a gift that keeps on paying
I know and have worked with MANY Ivy Leaguers....
First off your degree will help you get shortlisted for potential jobs.
Secondly the schools themselves have a lot of resources to place you or attract the right people to place you.
It is in their vested interest to do so.
Thirdly your alumni association is top notch and generally very tight. This goes back to the school itself having a lot of resources to play with.
All that being said, you are not promised anything at all. If you don't perform in real world conditions you will be no better off (in fact worse off) than everyone else.
There are a whole lot of people who can outperform the majority of the Ivy League grads in almost any industry...a lot of
THOSE people struggle to get a break to prove it.
Long story short, being from an Ivy League school will help your job searches be quite a bit more forgiving than for others. It just depends on where you are job hunting though.
If you go to Texas or some place and try to Ivy League your way into places, you had better have Texas stamped on your butt somewhere too. University of Texas, Texas A&M (only for example purposes) have their own good old boy networks.
My advice is stick with the network and you can do much better. Some schools are way better at doing and fostering networking with people in the real world than others.
