We found an abandoned dog this morning (Sat 17th) when the boys were at football training near Kallang Stadium.  She is a beautiful young ‘local breed’ dog, I estimate about 4-5 months old, with a golden brown short coat and an intelligent looking face.  She looks in very good condition, no fleas or ticks visible and was very friendly.  Several of the children at the football training were playing with her quite happily.  I think she has been abandoned for around 2 weeks, as I met a lady who lives nearby who has been bringing her food and water.

I would love to adopt her, but sadly I think she would need a garden to run around in.

We took her along to the SPCA to see if she might have a chance at finding a new home.  They will check her over and decide whether she goes into their adoption programme.  But if not, then she only has until about Tuesday at the latest before they put her to sleep.

If you have a suitable home for this young pup, do please contact the SPCA on 6287 5355 and quote case # 78155.

Please take her out of SPCA and contact ASD instead as they have a no kill policy. Maybe she was better off being fed as a stray than to be put to sleep by SPCA who already have enough dogs that cannot be rehomed....

Thanks for advice ASD.  Will look into it, but not sure if SPCA would let me take her back.  I had to sign a 'surrender form' which stated I realised she could be put to sleep within 24 hours.

Re. leaving her as a stray I felt wasn't an option.  If she didn't get run over by then, in a few months time she'd be having pups of her own and even more strays wandering around.

Also, I can't understand why the HDB rules don't allow x-breed dogs.  Surely it should be based on size of dog?  Nearly all the dogs at SPCA and ASD are mongrels and 90% of the population is banned from adopting them.  They are much better suited to this climate than the huskies and other ridiculous hairy dogs you see in Singapore.

I completely agree with you that it's ridiculous that HDBs don't allow mixed breeds. Or even restricting to dog sizes as some HDB units are way more spacious that condos!
I do hope you can take the puppy out....a mixed breed puppy doesn't have much chance to be adopted in just a few days... Wish I could help fostering it but we have 2 dogs already and both work fulltime... Am hoping for the best!

Oh No!

Sending a dog to spca should never be an option to any animal lover. Though, in this case I understand that you were trying sincerely to help. For future reference, there are several shelters that are no-kill like ASD and ALL. You also have the option of boarding the pup at places like Mutts and Mittens and several pet-shops like Furry Pets, at a fee - till you can find her a loving home. SPCA puts down 80% of the animals that walk through their doors. That leaves her a very minute chance of survival.

puregolden - I appreciate your concerns about SPCA, but they are just trying to do their best in difficult circumstances.  I'm sure everyone working there is an animal lover and it must break their hearts to have to put so many animals to sleep.

Even ASD can't guarantee to take in every dog - though those they accept will be kept until a home is found.

However on a positive note, I have heard that 'our pup' has made the cut at SPCA and will be on their adoption gallery after she clears quarantine in a couple of weeks.

Thanks to all those who have passed on the info.

Hi Rosie,

I called SPCA yesterday to enquire about the pup, quoting the case number that you had listed, because I have a friend who was willing to foster her till we could find a permanent home for her. SPCA told me that someone else had already claimed the pup. I asked them repeatedly if the people who had said they were claiming the pup were actually adopting her, and they said "yes". So I left it at that.

Why has the person you spoke to at SPCA told you something totally different??

It seems strange to me that they would keep her for a few weeks to clear quarantine when they also said they would have to put her down by Tue if no one adopts her?

I am also wondering if the puppy has been genuinely adopted.... there are so many mixed breed puppies for adoption that can't find homes and this one did (if it really did, good for the puppy!) in such a short time...

OK just called SPCA to get the full story.  Someone had been in to look at the pup (as a result of an email I circulated) but subsequently decided against it.  Perhaps it was at this stage that 'puregolden' spoke to them.

When I handed her over on Sat, I was warned that she would be checked over by the vet, and if deemed unsuitable, could be put down within 24 hrs.  They had already received numerous animals that day, and they just do not have the space needed to keep them all.  However, luckily for this pup, she passed the test and is now in quarantine for about 10 days and after that will be put into their 'adoption gallery'.

ASD seems to imply there is something sinister going on....I'm sure the SPCA are just doing their best with limited resources.  If you feel strongly about it, then please make a donation to allow them to increase their capacity.

That's fantastic news, Rosie! I'm so happy for the pup.Smiley Well done on your part.

However, with all due respect, I'd rather donate my money to a no-kill shelter like Noah's Ark or Animal Lover's League or to the many animal rescuers who pool their own resources to help save animals that SPCA considers non-adoptable, and puts down.

I never implied something sinister is going on at SPCA but genuinely didn't understand why they would say the puppy could be put down by Tue and at the same time say that quarantine takes a few weeks.

Also, as I do feel strongly about SPCA putting down animals within a short period of time, we used to foster an abused dog for ASD when I wasn't working yet. This dog who was afraid of men as a result of the abuse, opened up to my husband's gentle care and was completely comfortable with him within a week's time Smiley

I do of course believe SPCA is doing their best too, but through this board it's good to tell people to pls not pick up animals and bring them to the SPCA. Rosie, not saying you did something wrong, not at all, you did the best you could to trying to save the puppy but it's also good for people to be aware of no-kill shelters when others who've read this thread come across an animal on the street that needs help.

Let's hope this puppy will find a good home...
