Does anyone know the reasoning behind this message when I try to upgrade from Economy to Business on a Singapore Air    SIN-LHR flight ?

The flight selected is not eligible for upgrade redemption.

Do SQ block upgrades for certain flights or something ?

It says the flight is not eligible...that's why I'm curious.

You must have booked the ticket at a special discount fare .Some airlines dont allow you upgrades and also changing dates and a differnt flight  on special airfares .Check the rules of purchace on your ticket .

You can only ask for a upgrade on certain airlines if you have had a full economy fare .Each airlines has there own rules

Only S, Y, B and E fares are eligible to upgrade.

Check the small print on your ticket. Most likely you have bought a cheaper fare bucket.

It may be that the A280 flights can't be upgraded? Could that be it?

As mentioned already, depends on the category of ticket. When you buy a ticket, the fare conditions usually tell you whether it's eligible for airmiles, can be upgraded, can have date change free or for charge etc. Certainly when you buy online, SQ asks you to confirm you have accepted these conditions.

Here's another reason for getting that message:
If I book SQ flights online for husband and self in the same booking, I can't redeem an upgrade for us, even though it's the right kind of fare.  I need to buy our tickets in 2 separate bookings, and upgrade each one.

It often means that all available seats for upgrades have already been taken
