We are PR's..son recently born. I havent yet registered him. If I register him on a long term social visit pass, how long is it valid for? 5 years? any particular disadvantages to it?

I understand when he is 5 plus, if he starts school in singapore, he needs to get a student pass...will he be eligible to go to local school? or only private / international school ? also how long is the student pass valid for? does it need to be renewed every year?

Any of you'll (both PR's) tried this route for your son? any major hassles or disadvantages?

Further, should our mind change after say 8 years and we wish to change him to PR status. Would there be any problems getting approval?

what is the hesitation here to get your son a PR? State your true intention here? Are you worried that he will have do NS?  Huh Roll Eyes

You can get him an LTSVP until school age. Not sure when or how often he has to renew it but shouldn't be a problem. When he goes to Primary school, apply for a student pass. It will probably last until he moves to a new stage of schooling ie going to secondary school. I think it's around $40 up front for each year on the pass. Downside is that if you choose a local primary, your son will be in the last phase for place allocation, after citizens and PRs. If you apply for PR later, shouldn't be a problem to get it for him. As 2nd generation PR, he will be liable to do NS.

Second generation PRs who are males will have to serve NS unless the family uproots or if the child spent a significant part of his growing up years away from here.

LTSVP is one year at a time and good until the child goes to school. Student Pass up to 5 years depending on the letter written by the school. Your child can go to a local school with a Student Pass, but will be in the "foreigner " category which means the last group to enroll into school. (Choices may be limited at that time.)

Person that already took PR for their son... renouncing PR is a slippery slope. You are not guaranteed to get a Student Pass/LTSVP after the fact. You may wish to ask ICA.

Second generation PR means the son of a PR that is also a PR. It does not pertain to a non-PR.

Well, this is my understanding of the rules. To get the FULL and TRUE facts, you should consult the ICA.

I can only verify that the LTSVP is valid for one year as we have renewed it twice for our children (we are both PR's).
