Hello all

Moving to Sg next month, just wondering what the system is for school lunches for a 4 year old? Packed lunch or do they provide their own? And if so, I am presuming it is western food (excuse the ignorance!)
I have registered my boy for 2 schools but he hasnt been accepted yet.

Cheers

Depending on the school, but you should have the option of buying school lunch which should have choices of western, local and vegetarian foods or taking your own sack lunch. Not sure about all schools, but I'm guessing none of them include lunches with school fees.

Will depend on whether the school has facilities for lunch. Most do, but some only for older age groups than 4. Most likely if they have a lunch facility, you will order in advance and there will be a range of western/asian foods, usually with a veggie option. All charged extra. Packed lunch is often easier at this age as at least you know what he's eating. You'll need a cool-bag type lunch bag with ice-pack, easy to find here if you use this option.

I think it's best that you wait till you know which school your child would be going to,  before you go out and buy a lunch box of sorts.

I can't comment for other schools but for UWC, children in Infant School i.e. K1 - G1, are not allowed to go to the canteen to buy their own food.  They must bring in their own snacks and packed lunches.  And yes, peanut allergy is something that needs to be carefully dealt with.  UWC is rather strict about this, but I don't know about other schools.

And UWC has its own food carrier which every child must have.  So, maybe you want to check with the respective school/s ... I bought a thermal lunchbox (Gourmet) (other brands are Tiger, Zojirushi, Thermos ...) to be used with the food carrier because the food carrier is actually not of very much use.  My son has to sort out his snacks and lunch and place them in separate plastic boxes in his classroom.  So a thermal food container is useful if you want your son to have warm food, or chilled fruits and cheese.

If you want plastic lunch boxes, Howard's Storage has alot of choices.  Thermal lunchboxes - Isetan or Takashimaya.

My coolbag (or rather my son's) is a Colemans from Takashimaya, bought on the sportswear dept on 4th floor, designed to carry 6 drinks cans. Works fine for icepack + sandwiches & fruit in a tupperware box + 2 drinks cartons.
