We are thinking of doing a day trip to shop in JB just for the experience.  Have read previous posts, and have decided to take the bus from either Queen St or Kranji.  We will be going during the week to hopefully avoid the crowds.  3 questions:

1.  What time of the day is best in order to avoid queues at the check point both going to and coming from JB?

2.  As there will be several of us with different shopping needs (ex. fake name brand clothing, a few DVDs, donuts  Tongue, etc), which shopping mall/centre is the best if you had to choose just one mall or location?

3.  Which JB bus should we take if we live outside Orchard?  From Kranji MRT or Queen St?
Thanks !

Bus 160 or 170 from Kranji.

Three malls.
Holiday Plaza, there's good department store there as well as lots of shoe, DVD etc smaller shops.

Pelangi Plaza for more upmarket shopping.

Citi Plaza for more local stuff.

These are the three we use.
Can't say one is better than the other.  All depends what you want.

You might want to try Tesco and stuff like Terbrau but without a car it's a bit far out.
When using taxis agree the fare before you get in.

After 9am and before 5pm.

Thanks for the information -- very useful indeed.  I would like to drive to JB but have heard that driving and parking a car with a Singapore license plate in JB is risky.  Is this a real problem or is it overblown?

IMO it's probably overblown.
Certainly reading some sites then you'd think your life was in danger every time you went.

It does make me think about taking the car there though.

If you go and there's really no reason not to, then don't act like a rich ex pat.

Be careful and don't do silly things.
Act like you would in any major city.

If you haven't driven in Malaysia, I used to live and work in JB, then maybe do it on foot first and get your bearings and feel for the place.

Depends. Would you mind paying traffic fines (bribes)? Is it a problem if your car get stolen in the car park? Is the savings shopping in JB worth all of these risks?
