hi

Can anyone tell me how much I can expect as salary and benefits for a post doc position at A-Star -Biopolis, please?  I have a couple of years of postdoc experience in Canada and some good publications. Also, do Research Scientists get paid a lot more than the postdocs?
Should I aim for a research scientist position instead of the postdoc position?

Appreciate any help as I'm clueless about the salary scales in Singapore. Seems that they never advertise the salary scales and have different rating systems???

Thanks

Some good information recently covered on this thread:

postdoc salary at Institute of materials and research engineering (IMRE)

Factor in salary, housing, annual bonus, gratuity, etc. If you are highly qualified, you'll find the whole package much higher than in the US. Postdocs there take a vow of poverty for the training experience. In Singapore, postdocs are treated like professionals.

Well as a postdoc I would not look for money. I would rather look for a better supervisor as postdoc means u r going through a career development.

I would better work with less money with a renowned scientist in US or Europe rather than coming to singapore and working with somebody totally unknown to the scientific field.

So I think its better for a postdoc to go to US or europe rather than coming to singapore unless otherwise you are going bankrupt.

P.S. This is my personal feeling not intended to offend anybody or institution.

fact is, there are a number of world renowned life-science scientists on the island. well published on high ranking publications and have access to more funding compared to some of those in the US or Europe.

You accepted the job without asking those questions?

How would we know!?? If you didn't ask for it to be included, even if others received it you may not.

I have accepted the job verbally.
I am going to talk to HR soon to discuss salary, housing benefits, ecc... It would be better for me to know the average of gratuity, ecc so that I can discuss easily with them about what I am expecting.
In Europe you don't negotiate like you do in Singapore..I have no clue about what I can or can't ask!

For those keen on A-star, do a google on "Dr Cai Mingjie"
A-star researcher turned taxi driver.

I am also considering doing a postdoc in Singapore. I have heard numbers varying between 4K to 6K. Does the salary actually vary that much? Is there any difference between the universities (NUS or NTU), or between different sponsors such as A-STAR?

Yes the salary and benefits are very different depending on where you go. This will make a significant difference to you. Some places may try to low ball your salary  so be careful. ASTAR is generally more favourable than NUS with the exception of 2 institutes. The one that kicked out Cai Mingjie is now famous for it's deep and dark politics. Another one just diagonally across the road seems to think technicians can run everything and does not value postdocs. Best way to go about is to ask the people who actually work in the place or lab you intend to join. Get as many opinions as possible to build an acruate picture.

Good luck.
