Forture Seafood, junction of Bukit Timah Rd and Old Holland Rd.

Many people may already know of this place, it was the first place we ate at when first arriving in Singpore on June 27th 2001.

It's become known as the "Stalls" not sure why? And will be there long after we've departed I'm sure.

Anyway, where's your favourite place to eat?

Any good recommendations?

For junk food I like Tony Romas

For Singaporean food I like Roxy Laksa at the Lagoon hawker centre or the won ton noodle stall a few stalls up from there.

The first place I ate in Singapore was one of the Laksa wars places on East Coast Rd. I still like the laksa from those places but I don't live near them now so I don't go as often.

Why do you see Tony Roma as junk food but not laksa etc?

Because almost everything I eat there is deep fried!

I make my own Laksa sometimes too and I know that there's a lot less oil in it than any of the stuff I eat at Romas.

Preferably business lounge, then the food is free.  I know I'm flying out of here and will find something much better value for money and better service.

If I'm here, then hotel free flow champagne bingeathons.

Seriously?  I had been meaning to check it out for a while and ate there at the weekend.  Found it very, very average.

yeah, but that statement from you is like telling us that water is wet - it's obvious that not everyone is going to enjoy the same restaurants.  Imagine if we all loved that seafood place - it'd be packed all the time and nobody would go anywhere else!

Why don't you tell us where your favourite place to eat is instead.

The place the OP mentioned is also referred to as the Red Lantern by us hashers.  We eat there a lot after a run as it's cheap and delicious!  OK, so it's not exactly healthy but they do have a few items for the weight conscious such as steamed fish, tofu etc. They also don't seem to mind us singing a few bawdy songs!

Nonsense.  Poor food is poor food (I was being generous when I said "average") and it's worth pointing out to anyone who actually wants to enjoy their meal.  Of the five dishes we ordered, one was bland, one was tough and stringy, one came in a lurid, fluorescent yellow sauce and two were nice enough but we've had better at just about every other restaurant we've been to.

On a more positive note, I'm working on a shortlist of favourites to post.

Youd be hard pushed to beat the local Newton Circle hawkers center.  Everytime I am in town I head straight for it on the MRT (easy to reach from Orchard Rd hotels) and you get a great choice of local meals and get to dine with the locals themselves even.  We learned about the place from our guide book and we come to Singapore around 2 or 3 times a year.  prices are very cheap compared with the states and the guys there cant do enough for us.

My significant other and I dine regularly at the West End Cafe in Pasir Panjang village. It serves both good local and western food in a very pleasant and informal setting. Highly recommended.
