I wanted to pay the extra ($50 per segment) fee in order to get a seat with more leg room on SIA, but realized I could only pay the fee AFTER I have purchased the actual economy ticket!  And even after that, there is NO GUARANTEE I would get a "preferred or premium" seat!  As this would be a long flight to the US, I did not want to take a chance and get stuck with a ticket with a cramped seat, so I ended up booking with another airline.   Angry No wonder SIA is losing money !!!  Angry

Has anyone tried purchasing "preferred seats" on SIA?  How easy is it to get these?

Not that hard - have you thought of calling the reservations desk first to ask?

well... no,  because the last time I tried calling, I was put on hold for what seemed like an entire morning!

I've done this many times on the web site...couldn't be easier. Not sure where you're having problems!

After you've paid for your booking, you can then select a seat. Click on a premium seat that's free, and you'll be taken to a page to pay the fee. Once that's done, the seat is YOURS. Takes about a minute.

You're right - I missed the point.

Anyway, I've never not been able to get a priority seat when I wanted one....they're not hugely in demand as people seem reluctant to pay the extra.

In the unlikely event they were all taken, it's very easy to switch your flight time/date.

PP The point is that OP wants to know whether the seat is available before deciding whether to commit to the booking or to try an alternative flight. Cathay's website allows you to choose the seats before you pay (or at least it did when I last used it) but SQ's does not, I think. And if you switch your flight after paying, there is often a penalty.  I also empathise with OP about the SQ call centre: there is nothing worse than listening to a recorded message for 30 minutes that tells you to use their website instead - when you know full that the website does not provide the service you want (such as buying a separate seat for a child under two years old).

I just used to add a year to his age when I did the online booking. No-one ever queried it at check-in.

Agree about call centre. I was on hold fo 20 minutes at 5am last week when I called to cancel Scummy Daddy's flight that morning due to illness. Then got some blithering idiot who kept forgetting to put her mouth near the phone.
