Hi All

Am looking to buy a studio apartment in Singapore - preferably far from the city (Changi, Pasir Ris, Boon Lay Admiralty etc) - am currently based in London but want to buy a small house in Singapore.

Any help (names of brokers / condos /useful info) would be highly appreciated

Regards

Wherever you buy, just dont take any advice from the perennial bears on this board.  You will notice a lot of the repeat 'anti Singaporeans' posting drivel repetitively...once you learn to spot them, you will realize that they are usually either:

a) really bitter about how expensive their rent is
b) really bitter about how their 12-hour a day MNC job with little future
c) really ignorant about asian culture (typically they just live in the expat bubble)
d) really undereducated
e) some combination of the above

or it could be (

f)maybe they simply just dont want to make investments right before a major world economic downturn and unstable financial market conditions.

We would all like to own a property somewhere be it back home or somewhere abroad, or have a great little portfolio of safe bet shares etc but lets face it son, the recession is looming and everyone is bailing out or trying to turn their assets to cash at the moment.  Most folks are selling property and not buying.  Market is a tad oversupplied for the next while.

If you must buy property, make sure you have weighed up all the risks and be prepared to be in it for a long long time.

We are looking at a whole new set of conditions, those which we have never been in ever in our lifetimes.

The old models of yesteryear are no longer applicable, oh yeah - a fool and his money are easliy parted.

Point f) as you stated it doesnt really apply to the people I'm referring to.  If you re-read the post, I am simply talking about the useless anti-Singapore posters....they rarely spew anything other than mindless drivel about how they hate this little island....hardly a solid investment thesis in anyone's books.

PP,

I agree with you.  I cannot fathom how one can continually bitch and moan about Singapore yet continue to live here for years enjoying the opportunities available to them in these times.

Thankfully a lot of these bitter people have left (ironically not voluntarily) and the number of such posts have actually decreased markedly.

Hang on a sec, it is not being bitter to describe and have an opinion on the Singapore housing market. It is a joke, and nearly every western expat i know has a sharp intake of breathe when you look at the Million dollar price tags on 800 square foot dog boxes. This is an expat forum lets not forget, and most expats (me included) could buy stunning 8 bedroom mansions in first world cities for that kind of money.

I'd say it is eminently logical to be a bear in what it a speculators markets, there is no value for money in Singapore property. Sure you might 'win' big if your timing is good, but there is a real chances of ending up with a million dollar concrete albatross around your neck in this place.

I love Singapore but that doesn't mean i can't be critical of this silly, overprices dog of a housing market.

Kubes is still hanging on despite how much he hates Singapore. Life must be really miserable (surprising he has not suffocated to death with the hatred he has for Singapore) for him but I guess he would go off once OZ introduces imposes 50% tax on overseas income. Should be soon.

Go and buy your mansion in other first world cities. No one is forcing you to buy a dogbox here. But the rest are happily becoming rich investing in such dogboxes here. Ever wondered why you are working here and not in the other city you are dreaming of buying a mansion.

Err own a house elsewhere already.

As for other points

- Higher paid
- Lower tax
- Someone else pays half my cost of living

Don't put words in my mouth.  The Kubes family including me, love living in Singapore.  It is ideal for us at this stage in our life.  It seems that you have not understood anything that I have said.  Constructive criticism is not a sign of hatred or dislike.  If really hated SG I would just ignore it, instead I provide some perspective on what could make it better.  And one standout is not having housing that is the most expensive in the world.  That just reduces everyone's quality it life.

BTW, you are also wrong on the AU Govt's proposal.  It is not for non-residents but for AU residents on short off-shore postings.  This won't bother any of the long term AU expats in SG.

Sorry Kubes, but you are splitting hairs.  I consistently find your posts to be anything less than balanced and you are much more likely to post negative opinions of Singapore and its citizens than positive.  You, as much as anyone else, sink to the level of personal attacks (ie. labelling people as idiots) when you are baited into it.

If you were better at taking the high road, as well as more pragmatic rather than dogmatic about your opinions of the system and how people can make money in it, then you might have more support here. I presume your intent is to 'convert people to your opinions', given how frequently and lengthily you post here, therefore in future I would advise you to take the 'high road' as it will likely help to improve your credibility.
