Hi, what is the cheapest place to buy beef?  I typically shop at Cold Storage and Carrefour.  I have been to the NTUC Fairprice on Killiney Road as well a couple times.  Beef is ridiculously expensive here.  Do they sell beef at wet markets?  If so which ones should I go to nearest the city area and how much does it cost (whatever cut you know the price of)?

I usually get mine from the halal section at Giant - it's cheaper than most supermarkets (our local Fairprice don't sell fresh beef, only frozen).  I'm not sure of exact price as I buy different cuts and can't remember exactly how much per kilo it is, but total price is usually about $4-5 for a piece of stewing steak which will do two of us nicely for a curry or casserole (often with a portion left over for freezing, so it's a decent size).  I rarely buy anything posher than that, but you can get better cuts there.

I keep meaning to go to the Tekka market for lamb (or mutton as they probably call it there).  One of my friends once said it was a good place to buy it (this was pre-rennovation) but I still haven't got around to going.

Can anyone comment on whether Tekka is good for lamb?

At Tekka there is a stall called Joe's Butchers and they do great beef at slightly cheaper prices than Cold Storage etc.  They also have lamb.  We used them a lot, but moved and now closer to another market..

We were recommended Ben Foods in Jurong. They are a wholesaler who open to the public on a Sat, I think it's from 10-12. They sell rib eye & fillet steak from NZ in big pieces that are far cheaper than the supermarket & good value. We buy the big pieces then cut them up into steak size slices & freeze them.

I go to QBs in Corporation Road too.

I not only buy beef there (I think the chilled Oz fillet is 59per kilo from memory, but may be wrong. A whole fillet I bought the other day cost me $75, a similar sized one I saw in CS was $120) but also frozen salmon fillets, yoghurts, cheese, balsamic vinegar and tinned tomatoes. A peculiar selection! Lea and Perrins is cheaper there than anywhere else in Sing too.

Usually with the beef, I buy a whole fillet and get them to vaccum pack it into a variety of sized pieces for different purposes.

You have to buy a whole fillet, but you can buy individual rib eye steaks.

I usually go for Giant - they are generally good value.  I will go to Cold Storage at around 7pm to get the 1/2 price deals - you can generally get an eye fillet for a good price.   I am now going to give QB's a try....

QB's website says they're going to have an online store soon which sounds promising as at the moment they're too far to make it worth my while (by the time I'd paid the cab fare home I might as well have gone somewhere local and paid a bit more), so an online store would be great.

QB has a online order service running for a while now.

They offer free delivery for purchases above $200, or self-collection for order below that amount.

Do they take credit cards? I can't find any reference to payment methods on their site?

Well, well. This thread's only been up a short while and just look how many people have looked at it. Just goes to show that people are desperate to save money. This place is super expensive.
