Tanjong Rhu say Tanjong Rhu. It is a misrepresentation to say East Coast has MRT because the entire stretch does NOT have MRT in a few MONTHS. Tanjong Rhu is nearer to the stinky Kallang river than the Coast. The Stadium and Dakota is nearer to Geylang than coast for goodness sake. Check the Singapore map.

It means you're NOT staying in the East COAST. What an idiot. The Circle line only goes until D14 - Geylang district - far away from the Coast! The Eastern Region line (where EAST COAST is) will only open beyond 2020.

The Eastern Region MRT line is currently due to open in 2020 -just a little longer than a few months...

I live in the East Coast and the MRT is opening at my place in less than 5 months. It's called the Circle Line in case you didn't know, go to LTA website to find out.

Not true. I live in Tanjong Rhu in the East COAST, and the Stadium MRT opens shortly. "What an idiot". I can let you know where to buy a map of Singapore.

Btw, Circle Line doesn't go thru Geylang. The nearest would be Paya Lebar.

Haha, Stadium is nowhere near Geylang. Check the map. I walk 5 mins from the station to Tanjong Rhu, no way you can walk in 5 mins from there to Geylang. Grin

The next station isn't Dakota, it's Mountbatten btw. And Tanjong Rhu is D15 - East Coast. How do we get these idiots here?

There is NO MRT line that runs down East Coast. PERIOD. Please do NOT mislead the first poster. The circle moves in a circle and is NOT EAST COAST line for goodness sake.

I don't think anyone stated MRT would run along East Coast (in the future yes, but not now).

If you want MRT and East Coast your only choice is Tanjong Rhu. Nice area. You should try it  Smiley

You have a lot of good choices in terms of districts but in general just check out housing in the East Coast, I'd recommend the Siglap area.  You will be close to your office and there are a lot of expats in the area, restaurants, shopping, etc. near the beach and park (don't expect much from the Singapore beaches or parks but its better than nothing).  Housing prices are relatively modest and have been falling, you can get a nice large 2 or 3 bedroom condo for a couple thousand per month in a nice building with full amenities (e.g. pool, gym, sauna, tennis courts, etc.).

I'm surprised no agent or landlord has jumped on this to deny that prices have fallen, and that rentals are crap

Because agents don't waste their time in this forum. They are busy making money unlike you. When you find agents in this forum then it means the market is dead.

There is no cinema at Parkway Parade - pls be honest to newcomers. It is the ONLY mall at East Coast and is usually overcrowded during weekends - there are fights are the car park fighting over space almost every weekend. The artificial beach on reclaimed land is also very crowded during weekends. There are reports of 300,000 fishes dying near the east coast and floating to the shores just few weeks ago. You can imagine how polluted and toxic the waters are there. Animals are the most sensitive to environmental changes and if animals are dying in droves, it says a lot about the environment there. The east side of Singapore is also the most dense and cluttered with hardly any green pockets of nature reserves. But since u work in Changi, you don't much of a choice - East Coast or Bedok or Pasir Ris would be closest to your workplace.

well I'm speaking as a mother of young children who was able to go to the EC park in the morning during the week or after school when it was lovely and quiet.  The OP  is planning to work near Changi so traffic shouldn't be a problem though to be honest I never found travelling into the city from EC a problem at all.  It's a great local area.  We could walk easily to Tangjong Katong, Geylang, Joo Chiat, East Coast Road, the Indoor Stadium for concerts etc.  Parkway Parade is actually a nice local shopping centre as is Kallang with quiet wide isled Cold Storage, Skating, Bowling, Cinema, Kids Play Areas. I could walk or cycle my kids to school through leafy suburbs.  The city, husbands work, Sentosa, Changi, Pasir Ris Park was always just an easy 10 or 15 mins drive away.  I don't know anyone who wants to move from the EC but know quite a few who are considering moving there once their leases are up but as I said - it all depends on your priorites.

The roads are too jammed up during weekends.Too many traffic lights. It can take up to 20 minutes just to travel 500 metres from the exit of Parkway parade carpark to the ECP. Seems like all the residetns of East Coast descend on Parkway parade on weekends. You can't blame them as this is the only shopping centre there. The others are a long drivve away.In fact on a Sunday morning, a resident staying in the cheap far north can reach Orchard Rd malls via CTE within 19 minutes - faster than it takes East Coasters to reach Orchard Rd. East Coast is grossly overrated.

Market must be dead and buried then because the other threads are full of them.

Where? You must be shit scared of seeing higher rents and thus your wild imagination about agents flooding this forum. Wake up. There is nothing much you can do about where the market is heading. The only option is to buy a one way ticket out.

For your info, Suntec is just 10 minutes drive away

East Coast is the best place in Singapore to live if you get a place in central east coast near parkway.  Further out, there is not much around.  Its an area which has everything you need and there is rarely any reason to venture out from it.  Beach, shops, pubs, ace coffee/laksa shops, hdb town centre, restaurants etc.

I get tired of residents from the dull boring expat areas coming on here and bashing it.  You will love the east coast because you will live in amongst friendly locals.  Yes the MRT is many years off yet but the bus service to Paya Lebar MRT is good.  Takes only 5 mins up Katong Rd or you can walk it like I do most times. Anyway there are direct buses from outside our post office which will get you to most places.

Only reason you walk it is you probably don't have the money for a bus fare.

I walk it because I enjoy the walk and there are a few good coffee shops on Katong Rd which I love to eat at. LC foodcourt, June Fried Rice, Kim Huat roasted meats etc.  If you choose to venture outside of your air conditioned life of maids, malls, meetups and taxis, you also will find a whole different Singapore waiting to be explored.

Hi All,

I'm moving to Singapore in March & will be working on Beach road.  I'm hoping to rent an apartment within walking distance from my office but I'd also like to be within walking distance to things like markets, tennis clubs, a gym, movie theaters & parks.

Will I be able to find what I'm looking for?  No advice or insight is unwanted.

Thanks in advance!

Just talking to my fiancee on this one as she is the local expert -Beach Road is the Thai district of the city around Golden Mile complex.  She recommends firstly getting a serviced apartment at The Concourse for a month as they are quite resonably priced according to our friend and look around as the accommodation out there varies. There is a lot of HDB housing in this area too.  You could easily live out by Kallang.  Its only a couple of MRT stops to Bugis and a lot more quieter than the constant noise drone of the Bugis area.  I myself would keep out of Bugis as I dont care much for that area as its noisy 24/7.  If you absolutely must live there then consider Burlington Square as its one of the better value places and right next to large shopping complex, short walk to MRT and not too far a walk to Dhoby Ghaut end of Orchard Road.
