I'm not sure what happened to the earlier thread on this. Why are Singaporean and Southeast Asian cooking shows soooo bad? Coco, Vivian, Tablescapes.... Rubbish. I still enjoy Saturday Cooks, though they are all repeats, and Mark Bittman's Best Recipes in the World, or somesuch. He's a bit pompous, but a real foodie.

You think it's bad - don't watch it.  Some people like them.  The earlier thread was probably dropped because it's just a total Singapore bash, which this part of the b o a r d is not about.

Wow. That is very defensive and emotional, which is also what this part of the board is not about. Differences of opinion on substantive issues in this area are rare, it is far more supportive, but I would like to think they are encouraged or at least acknowleged, as opposed to the sometimes rabid exchanges on the other ***. Chill out, please.

Cheers

River Cottage Spring has started. I loved the earlier ones, but High Fearnley-Whittingstall is starting to build a business empire, and it has lost some of its charm. Like Jamie, he is getting a bit preachy.

I like Hugh but if he's going preachy then I'll probably go off him like I have with Jamie.  Jamie's too much these days, can't keep a civil tongue in his head and thinks everyone is rich and lives in rural Essex or somewhere.

One of my faves at the moment is Robert Rainford from License to Grill - "oh yeah, man look at those smokin hot babies"........I don't actually take in what he's cooking, I just think he's excellent and my kids think that his wife has kicked him out and he actually lives in that garden - ha ha  Cheesy

The latest behind the scenes "reality" show this week on Robert Rainford's trip to Singapore last year was so pompous and dry that it made a colonoscopy look like fun. But Channelnewsasia had a fun one last night on a young woman who wanted in Beijing who wanted to become a master Peking Duck maker!

There is a new one on AFC called "Chasing the Yum" which is pretty good. The food is the star, not the chef. It's more like food shows in the '80s where they still take you through the prep, the process, measurements etc. Perhaps not as entertaining as watching that cheap "Coco cooks in short outfits" but definitely informative.

I'm a big Iron Chef fan, too. I watch all the repeats but have yet to see the one where they pull the live octopi out of the tanks as the battle's special ingredient! I love how the same two or three(?) guys do all the English translations and provide the sports-like play by play (Fukui san! The Iron Chef says this is a mixture of yada yada, yada yada and yada yada). There is lots of interesting stuff on Wiki about the show, including a factoid that one challenger boasted that he used over $1,000 of lobster just to flavour asparagus in his battle, and then threw the lobster away!
