What do you consider average class sizes to be?

Most international schools have small class sizes  - around 20-24 is the maximum.  Out of interest, why do you want your child to be in a smaller class?  If he/she has learning dificulties, they may find it difficult finding a place because lots of international schools have entry requirements.

Hardly anyone in the UK would be happy with going privately and having 24 in a class. You pay for the smaller class sizes and individual attention for your child.

The optimum size is 16-20 with a teaching assistant who is above averagely qualified.

Studies have actually shown that the optimum size is around 15-16.

Think of the best prep schools in the UK, you won't find one that has 24 in a class. That's a good state school class size. I am really surprised some of the UK International schools can get away with charging fees and having 24 in a class.

UK, UK, UK, UK.....Give it a rest, you're not in the UK, sweetheart.  Schools in the UK pay a decent salary for teaching assistants I bet

PP, I think that's why "Average" asked what the OP considered to be average. Average for someone used to a UK prep school isn't the same as average for somewhere else. OP, be specific about what you want and you may get a targetted answer rather than a side argument about international schools v UK preps.

Just to add TAs should be paid top dollar, it's a very important, often undervalued, job.

Yeah, and I bet you think they should get schooling for free too... The actual teaching itself is not a highly paid or particularly appreciate profession, as we all know. But what the hell, let's pay the TA top dollar. God knows the teacher wouldn't be able to work otherwise, right?

Thanks for those of you who posted sensible answers (as opposed to unjustified slagging off of other posters - you guys are just plain angry, get some therapy)

Looking for a class size of below 20. Where I come (which isnt the UK), 24 in a class is considered a large class.

Dover Court has around 15 in a class.   Nice small school.  Does have a large special needs department but also a great mainstream student body. Our kids LOVE it.

for the 4 year old class I am guessing almost every international school in Singapore would have less than 20 kids with a full time assistant. Some also have assistants for the 5 year old class.  Huh Which schools did you look at that don't??

Tanglin have 22 or 24 (can't remember)
OFS have 24
ISS have 22
Dover court told me max 22, but from PP it sounds smaller.

So quite a few have above 20.
